Transfer question

Well, I messed up big time in high school, so I didn't even bother applying to Stony Brook. I read on this forum that the requirement for transferring are 24 credits and a 3.0 GPA. How can someone get 24 credits in by the spring term? Also, if I meet the criteria (3.0 and 24 credits), what are the chances of getting in?

Good question, and it’s one we’ve been getting a lot lately.

Yes, 24 credits and a 3.0 GPA are the requirement to be admitted as a transfer student. If you don’t have that yet (or are finishing that now), then you’ll need to wait until we get those grades before you can get a decision.

The problem – and this is the tricky part – is that there’s a very strong possibility that we’ll be full by the time your spring grades get to us. Unfortunately, given the applicant pool this year, which is large and competitive, there’s not a lot we can do about that. We’re telling students to get us their grades as soon as they’re in (and no, we can’t do anything with midterm grades) and hope there’s still space. Have a backup plan or two for fall, and in a worst-case scenario, consider re-applying for Spring 2011.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear, I meant to say I wanted to transfer in for Spring 2011 term (still in high school at the moment).

Is the applicant pool for Spring smaller than the applicant transfer pool in Fall? Also, when does Stony Brook start taking transfer applications for the Spring term?

If you’re graduating high school in June 2010, and by your own admission you didn’t do well, then Spring 2011 is probably not going to be a realistic option for you. Best case, it’d be Fall 2011 (once you’ve completed 24 credits), but then – unless things change between now and then – you’ll run in to the scenario I explained above.

If you can find a way to pick up summer/winter credits so you’ll have 24 completed credits and the 3.0 by March 1, 2011, then that might be a best bet for you.
