Transfer questions

Hello! I apologize for length, please bear with me!

I posted this over at college life, but so far haven't had any replies!

I go to a private school right now. I'm most likely transferring at the end of this semester due to a few reasons, the biggest is that they don't have the academic program i decided to major in. Other reasons are that its just a small campus, not a lot of people, and worst of all, everyone at my school is extremely cliquey, so if you don't fit right in with a clique, sucks for you. And as introvert as i am at first, i feel like i need something bigger.

I'll most likely be making the move to THE Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. It's one of 2 schools in the state that offer a curriculum in meteorology. It's obviously gonna be a big jump, so i was seeking some advice and answers.

First, the distance from home is going to be so great (about 4 hours) that it will be impossible to come home often at all (like i do now). Any tips on adjusting to life AWAY from home? 2 of my closest cousins (one lives nextdoor) will be going to school there as well, so that will probably help a lot, but im sure i will miss HOME a lot.

The Rooming situation. Right now i live with a high school friend and as much as i wouldn't do that again, its been kinda nice because we have the same sleep schedule, like the same TV shows, etc. I'm REALLY worried about the roommate im gonna get at OU, especially with its reputation of being a party school. My cousin tells me they have an extensive roommate survey to fill out, but im still worried. Also, how do i tell my current roommate that i'm going to transfer?? I'm pretty sure im the only friend he has here, and i know i need to do what is best for me, but at the same time im worried about that.

Also, my dorm room has a private bathroom (that we share with another room). In my new dorm its most definitely gonna be a floor bathroom. Any tips?

Any more tips for a successful transfer?

If you could just answer a couple of the questions i would be extremely greatful!

Thanks to all!

First, good luck with your transfer. I’m in the process of doing the same thing and it can be stressful :)

Here’s some answers, or information I suppose to your questions.

It’s pretty normal to think you’re going to miss being at home. It’s nice to always have the things you’re comfortable with. I can’t give you too many tips on how to make the adjustment easier because I was pretty comfortable with leaving my house and moving on. I think the best think to remember, like you said, is that you can still go home. You’re not being forced to sit somewhere you don’t want to be in. Given that you haven’t had a great time with the people at your current school I’m going to assume transferring will be super helpful in that area. Nothing makes schools feel more like home than having a good group of friends. It’s no fun knowing you haven’t got anyone around to talk to and I think transferring will really help with that.

Rooming can be interesting. To be honest, it’s really sort of the luck of the draw. Sometimes you get a great one and other times they’re downright awful. There’s always the ability to request a change once the semester starts (though it’s difficult) so why not consider a single? They’re slightly more expensive but, then you don’t have to worry about sharing your space with someone you can’t stand. As for telling your roommate, I think it’s best just to be honest. He’ll understand and try and make some new friends. It’s really the only thing he can do. That’s a tough thing to answer but, I’d remember that just because you don’t go to the same college doesn’t mean you aren’t friends anymore.

Community bathrooms aren’t awful. Every time I’ve used on I’m the only one in there and if there is more than 1 person its shower time. The only advice I have for that one is wear sandal’s/ flip - flops in the shower and get a shower caddy thing. It’s a pain if you don’t have one.

I hope I helped a little :)

Are you at case western? :o
