Transfer questions

Background:
I am currently enrolled at a community college and about to finish my second year. My first year I had no motivation which resulted a relatively low GPA, therefore I have to stay another year which would make it a third year... By the end of Summer of 2011, I will have a total of 60 transferable semester units. Fall of 2011 is when I will apply to UCI, UCD, UCSB, UCR and UCM.

Question(s):
1. Since I am applying in Fall of 2011, I will have to take classes for 2 full semesters which will will increase the number of units...will this disqualify me from admission to the Universities?
2. Would this make me a junior-level applicant or senior-level applicant?
3. Will I be able to qualify for TAG?

Thanks in advance

No it won’t disqualify you from admissions

Junior-level applicant

too many variables to say (GPA? IGETC? PREREQS?)

If all else fails, just apply to a cal state where you’ll be a shoo-in

1 & 2. you’ll be in senior standing if you surpass 75 units (not sure how many units exactly), so just take classes up to the maximum to remain in jr standing because you wont be able to transfer with senior standing as you know. you don’t have to be a full time student, so just take classes that will help your gpa (assuming you’re done with pre-reqs/igetc as mentioned before)
3. i THINK you qualify for TAG as long as you have a 3.0 gpa

I thought people that is senior standing are the ones that doing upper division courses.

Im so confused.

^^

Don’t listen to Andrizzle as he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

The only way you could be considered a senior-transfer is if, along with your CC coursework, you had credit from another 4-year university.

So if you’ve taken all your classes ONLY at a community college, then no matter how many credits you take there, you’ll still be considered a junior-level transfer.

WORD!

Since I am applying in Fall of 2011, I will have to take classes for 2 full semesters which will will increase the number of units…will this disqualify me from admission to the Universities?

Most UC campuses cap the maximum number of units you can transfer (to satisfy graduation unit requirements) at 70 semester or 105 quarter units. Units beyond the maximum are granted subject credit (you can use them to waive out of prerequisite courses or subject requirements) but not unit credit (you cannot use them to count toward your graduation units).

The only exception to this rule is if you have previously attended a 4-year college. UCs placed maximum unit restrictions on students with post-secondary 4-year college coursework. For more information on the campus-specific restrictions, see http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/files/ETS10_TransferQA_final.doc</a>, page 14.

Would this make me a junior-level applicant or senior-level applicant?

If you have only attended community college, you will always be junior-level applicant regardless of the number of units you complete beyond the minimum requirement (60 semester or 90 quarter units).

Will I be able to qualify for TAG?

Definitely yes if you have only attended a California community college. Rules vary if you completed 4-year college coursework, attended out-of-state community college, or had international post-secondary coursework.

ahh my bad, i think you guys are right it’s been a while since i was at cc. UC’s will only take up to 105 quarter units (i think it’s capped to 95 quarter units now) but yeah you’ll be considered in jr standing regardless.

@jvesco22. you’re a dick, but i think you already know that.

Andrizzle you jelly?

Yeah brah…you jelly…

not my thread, but instead of creating a new one, I’ll ask here:

Do I need to have my transfer prereqs completed by the time I apply next fall? Or can I have them completed by Winter/Spring '12?

thanks.

if by “transfer prereqs” you mean igetc and/or major pre req courses, then then you can have them done by spring 12 (assuming you’re applying this fall)

be advised however, that if you’re applying to a competitive major such as biz econ, some colleges prefer you have their pre reqs done by the end of fall prior to transfer

ah yeah, I meant major prereqs. And I’m a philosophy major, so I suppose there shouldn’t be much of a problem. thanks!

I also have another question. Since im applying fall of 2011 and applications end before the fall semester is finished, do i update my application? and if those grades are superb, does that give me a chance to get admitted?

^ You’re free to update grades when they’re available, but there’s no guarantee that they can be considered in admission because of timing issues.

Edit: Never mind, I read it applying for fall 2011, not applying in.

The grades the fall before you transfer are the last grades the UC sees, and if they are superb, they certainly help your chances. There is an application update for you to put those in.

btw, when applying to the colleges i stated about, do they require the overall GPA (transferable & non-transferable courses) or do they only require and look at transferable courses GPA
