Transfer Questions

Hi all!

I am trying to transfer into CALS to major in Agricultural Education. I origionally wanted to do Animal Science, but the prereqs were too much, they would have taken me too long. Now I wish I had stuck to my first plan because my overall GPA isn't quite up to par for admission into Ag Education because I did really badly the first time I went to college back in 99.

When I filled out my transfer app, they didn't ask for an essay or letters of reccomendation. There were only 2 small boxes for me to make a statement of what I intend to do with the degree and my ECs. Is there anyway to send an essay explaining why my GPA is so low and/or get letters of reccomendation? I believe I could get one from my Comp/Lit instructor (I had him for all 3 of my required English courses) and a friend who is an Ag teacher in my county and also a UF graduate.

I only had a .65 gpa transferred over from my first college and now I have a 2.12 overall, calculated by UFs standards (no grade forgiveness). I'd say that's a vast improvement. I thought that I would have a 2.53 by the end of Spring with my estimated grades (and I actually estimated a little low..there are 2 courses that I will probably be a letter grade higher than I estimated), but it turns out my math was wrong and it will only be a 2.26, after summer when I finish my AA it will still only be a 2.43. I do have the required 2.5 in my core classes. Animal Science only requires a 2.0, but I didn't do the prereqs (they will add 4 classes, so that would make 7 I would have to take over the summer including 2 maths and 2 sciences). I don't think there's anyway to apply to 2 different majors anyway. I was also diagnosed with ADHD at my first school, but don't have the resources to be treated for it or to be diagnosed again.

Does anyone have an experience with this? Do they ever "look past" really old grades? Is it possible that they will make a decision based only on my grades since I came back to school (3.06 overall at the end of Spring, even with 2 Fs averaged in). I've never been a good student. I barely graduated high school. I have been working really hard to make the most of the 2nd chance I've been given, but it looks like I may not have that 2nd chance after all.

My backup plan is to take 1 more semester at my state college and get the prereqs for Animal Science done and then apply again for Spring. I really didn't want to do that because I only have 3 classes left for summer and I'm done with my AA. There's no way I can get 7 classes done over the summer. I'm not even sure if they offer all the classes I need and besides, by the time they tell me no for fall it will be too late to apply again.

Sorry for the novel; I just really want this and it's so close I can taste it. I need to prove to myself that I can do this, that I'm not the screwup I've been told I am my entire life. I am (obviously) a non traditional student and single mother who works along with full time school. I don't know if that would come into play at all. I'm assuming that if I don't have the 2.5 they require right now they will just pass me up. I was hoping they'd give me an acceptance pending completion of prereqs (working on the last one this semester and my 2nd foreign language) and required gpa. Sigh...I don't even know who makes the decision. Does anyone know who I would contact?

Also wanted to add that there is a shortage of qualified ag instructors in my state, and I’ve seen evidence of it in my county. The school board here values the contributions made by the ag industry so they continue to fund Ag classes. One HS has 150 students in the FFA and we have 4 High schools in the county that offer Ag classes along with at least 2 junior high schools. Again, I’m not sure if they’ll take this into consideration as I’m not sure how competitive Ag Education is.

Sorry, it is hard to tell. Are you at a community college in Florida working on your AA degree? If so grade forgiveness would be included in your overall average.

I go to St. Johns River State College, yes it is a Florida public Jr. College. Two of my classes were transient classes at Santa Fe (they have a campus near me, I live about an hour from Gainesville.) Are you sure about them counting grade forgiveness for state community college students? Because if they do that would be awesome. I’ve already replaced one F with an A and at the end of Spring I will have replaced 2 more Fs with what should be a B and an A. If that’s the case I will almost certainly have a 2.5 overall at the end of spring. That only leaves the issue of if they will admit me pending a raise in my gpa or just automatically reject me because my current gpa is not yet a 2.5.

Also I will have my AA at the end of summer term, before I enter UF.

Overall GPA does include grade forgiveness, since your are at a Florida public CC earning an AA degree.

That would be great because with grade forgiveness I will have a 2.58 gpa at the end of Spring. Right now with grade forgiveness it’s only a 2.14. I guess now I just wait and see…
