Transfer questions

I’m posting a lot on here, I know, but I just have so many questions.

First, I’ve been reading about the transfer process to UF and reading the statistics and what not. I’ve noticed that the top 5 colleges students transfer from are community colleges. If I transfer from a university (FSU/FAU), will that make a big difference? If so, if I transfer to a community college first, then apply from that college, would that make a difference?

Secondly, I’m wondering since I applied to UF for Summer 2014, and got denied, will that impact my chances of being accepted next time around?

Lastly, I’ve noticed the application includes a statement of intent. If I apply more than once for different semesters, would I just use the same statement of intent? Also, would applying several times negatively impact my chances?

Sorry for all the questions.

Might as well tag @Gator88NE while I’m at it

I wouldn’t bother with transferring to a CC, I don’t think it would make that much of a difference. Focus on keeping your GPA high and taking all of the prerequisite course requirements.

Your freshman application will play no role in your transfer application. In fact, as a transfer student you will be applying to the college and it’s the college admin folks that will be making the decision. This is a completely different group from the folks that handle freshman admissions.

I don’t think applying several times has much (negative or positive) impact on your chances. However, if they don’t accept you the first time, unless something significantly changes (like you’re applying to a different college/major or completed a prerequisite class), the results will likely be the same. If you don’t get accepted, try to find out the reason. It could be something as simple as a missing prerequisite course, and after taking it, you could re-apply to the college.

Good Luck!

Having the AA degree from a community or state college gets preference but how much preference depends on your major.

Thanks @Gator88NE‌ and @Melissa96. Do you know how much preference it would have on a computer science major? If it is that big of an influence, I will post pone receiving my AA degree from FSU and get it at PBSC instead.

Also, would it be beneficial to join honor societies? I’ve been invited to the Golden Key, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Phi Eta Sigma. Would this make any difference in my transfer application, taken into account I have no extracurriculars?

@andcc23 The organizations you listed above aren’t really anything more than ego boosters, in my opinion. They get list of everyone with gpa’s of (insert gpa) and above, and send them all the same thing in the mail praising them for their accomplishments and that they’re inducted into (name of organizations)…as long as you pay the $100 fee. They’re not technically scams, but they mainly just make money off of peoples applications and send them a certificate in the mail. Most schools recognize that these have little value to them.

I don’t know how much of a difference transferring from a CC (vs. an university) would matter, but I would think not enough for you to transfer to a CC simply for the boast.

Keep in mind that UF has two Computer Sciences programs, the first is in engineering and the second is in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). See below for CLAS’s requirements:

Use the following link to view a comparison of computer science programs at UF:

I would think that if you got denied from the Engineering computer sciences program, you could re-apply to the CLAS program (or just go ahead and apply to CLAS). As always, check with someone in admissions for the details.

Good Luck!

PS: By the way, FSU’s program is fairly solid (It’s competitive against UF’s program) and after two years, you may not want to transfer (and leave your new friends, etc). Like UF, FSU has two CSE programs, one in Engineering (ABET accredited) and one out (one’s a BS and the other is a BA).

Thanks so much for your response! Yes, FSU may have a decent computer science program however I’ve noticed that many top recruiters pull from UF much more than FSU. FSU gets little or no attention when it comes to computer science, whereas UF usually gets people from Amazon, IBM, Intel, etc.
