Transfer Questions

This is just a question specifically about SATs. I took mine in high school a few years ago and got a 1250/1600. I just recently tried again as a college student and got a 2070/2400. I'm going to try again. I think I can get at least a 660 in the math portion and, if not perfect, then near-perfect Critical reading along with at least a 740 in the writing. I'm hoping to get a 700 on the math, which I think is possible if I'm not careless, but I'm not sure. My question is: if I have high English and Critical Reading scores will that cancel out a low 660 type score for the math. I'm thinking of trying transfers at places like Cornell, Columbia, Georgetown, Harvard, Yale.

I had a similar problem to yourself. Upon my second attempt at the SAT, I scored a 770 CR 780 W and 670 M. No matter how much I studied, I couldn't seem to raise the math. So I gave the ACT a shot and scored a 34 on the math section. You may try that. Colleges like to see that you're well rounded, but a 660 is not very low for the math portion, so you shouldn't worry.

Yeah (to brand_182)...I would give ACT a chance. Studies have shown that students do far better on vs. the other. Maybe, you might have a good shot at ACT.

Yeah, I'm just worried for those really competitive schools a low math score might hurt.

As was I, which is why I tried the ACT and did wonderful. My scores on the ACT are far more balanced than the SAT, where I was seen as more of an English student than a math one.

You don't have to send the ACT score in either, and you can retake the test as many times as you want, only sending in one. Your plan of retaking the SAT repeatedly is not really a good one as colleges don't like to see students take it more than 3 times and they'll see every score with the SAT.
