transfer questions

I reviewing some possible schools in NY, and i was wondering what are the transfer requirments for SB.

i am currently at UCLA, transfered in from comm college.

Gpa is 3.54 (from all schools)
Units completed around 90

no extra curriculars
Good work experience
Internship

My concern is how many units would SB be willing to give me if accepted, and how hard it would be to get accepted.

I know that CUNY-hunter/baruch are pretty much 99% chance i will get in. But i never considered any of the SUNY schools b/c they all seem to far form the city, however SB is not that bad.

I'm also applying transfer to Stony Brook (but i'll be a sophomore if I'm accepted and attend). I couldn't find anything on the limit of transferable credits, although 90 credits is a lot to transfer. With your GPA, especially since it's from a Tier 1 school like UCLA, you should have no problem getting accepted. What major are you interested in? Based on your GPA and work experience, I think you may even have a shot at NYU if you are interested in it and can afford it.

but i transferd to UCLA from community college. I dont think i have any chance at NYU at all.

My major will be something along the lines of econ, math/econ, accounting, finance.... something like that, depending on what the school offers.

I think NYU would reject me... and even if they didnt , i cant afford it.

If you did well at UCLA I think you'd have a shot at NYU regardless o whether you went to a CC or not. But yea, NYU is really stingy with aid. If you think you can't afford, it probably is best not to waste the time, energy and money on the app. With that said, I think you have a good shot at Stony Brook.

Also, SB isn't too far from the city. You can get to Manhattan in less than two hours from Stony Brook using public transportation.

I think for NYU i will have too manyunits anyways. right now i have 90 from CC, and 18 in progress at UCLA

I would probably be living in brooklyn, ... so i managed class 2times a week it would be fine by me.

I dont know really know fo what other schools to consider.

My list is

SB, Baruch, Hunter

Baruch being first choice i think .

When it comes to transferring, all we're looking at is your GPA. We don't look at extracurriculars for transfers. If you have a 3.5, you should be admissible; the minimum is a 3.0 for most programs.

In terms of credits, anything that's from an accredited school (which UCLA is, and I'm assuming your CC is) that's at least a C or better will transfer. (And if you have a 3.5, I'm assuming just about everything is a C or better.) There's a transfer guide on our site (<a href="http://www.stonybrook.edu/transfer/creditequivalencies.shtml%5B/url%5D">http://www.stonybrook.edu/transfer/creditequivalencies.shtml</a>) for the local community colleges, so you can at least get an idea of how your courses will transfer.

There's no limit on how many credits you can transfer; but there is a minimum number of credits you'll need to complete here at Stony Brook for a degree (at least 36). So you might transfer in 90 credits, but if you still need 12 general education credits and 40 credits in your major, then you'll graduate with 142 credits, even though you "only" need 120 to graduate. So it's not as cut-and-dried as "I have 90, I need 30."

I'd have to look at a transcript, then I'd be able to give you a better idea of what you need. If you have a lot of courses from your intended major, you'll want to get in touch with someone from that department also, as they're the ones who make the determination about what transfer credits will apply to your major.

Hope this helps; if you have other questions, let me know!

thankyou for your help.

What about financial Aid?
That is a BIG BIG issue for me.

I get full aid at UCLA, 22k, of which only 6k is Loans ----the remainder is all grants.

Considering my EFC=0, but that ia m NOT a NY resident, is that going to just create big problems for me?

Federal grants are usually transferable, I think; but you'd want to check with the Financial Aid office, because I'm not sure. If you have no EFC, though, I'd figure you'd probably qualify for the same things here. Check with the Financial Aid office to make sure.

I am doing my application right now :) if i choose one major and then want to change is that going to be prolematic.

Or if i want to double major.

I have major indecisivness .

Major indecisiveness is not a problem. You can only list one major on the app; if you decide to add a second, you'd need to do that after you enroll.
