transfer questions

Hi! i am going to college in FALL 09 for my freshman year. But i want to transfer into a top/ better college. i screwed up in high school (GPA and SAT wise).

Should i re-take the SAT during my freshman year in college to increase my chances of acceptance? Money is not a factor to me, $45 isn't a lot.

I know that SAT and high school grades don't matter as much but i still want to increase my chances. I want to transfer after my first year and attend my transfer school during my second year.

for transfers, I'm going to need to get college professor recommendations, but i think we will also need guidance counselors. are guidance counselors called freshmen advisers in college? Also, is it hard to get professor recommendations?

if there are any information about transferring that you want to share, please tell me =) thanks!

I’m not sure about a lot of your questions, but when it comes to getting recommendations from professors, you’re really going to need to want to stand out somehow, be that coming to class very prepared and participating, writing really outstanding essays, going to office hours, etc. Now, you don’t want to be too aggressive to the point of being obnoxious, but you’re going to need your professors to be able to say more than “(s)he showed up and did the work.”

Once you’ve established a pretty good impression with a few professors, it’s really as simple as approaching them and asking if they’d be willing to write you a recommendation, so far as I can know. If they respect you as a student and they have the time, they’ll probably gladly as yes.

I’m not sure about needing recommendations from your advisor. I think it’s an option, but honestly a college advisor might meet with you two or three times freshman year, tops, unless your school assigns advisors by who you take classes with, or you choose your advisor.

There’s a section on this forum for transfers…trying asking there, or reading older topics there and I’m sure you’ll find the answers to your questions.
