Transfer rejected despite having 3.23 GPA and over 60 credits

I did every class up to now at community college to save money and now that I’m ready to move on I applied to College Park in February and sent my transcript in May. I got rejected yesterday…

Were you enrolled at a MTAP partner community college?

Yes

Did you apply to any other MD public universities!

I’m not an expert on Maryland public schools but from skimming the MTAP information I don’t see a guarantee of acceptance to the College Park campus. Were you offered transfer to another UMD campus?

I see that the MTAP partner schools provide advisors to assist with the transfer application. Did you take advantage of this resource? Have you discussed the rejection with the advisor for insight?

Submit a completed UMD transfer application by the early action deadline following the semester in which you’ll complete all MTAP requirements

In which semester did you finish earning your 30 credit hours? My reading of the above is that you should have applied for MTAP that next semester. If you have 63 hours, then I think you are well past that. The other alternative is if you’ve earned an Associate’s degree. With 63 hours, I am assuming you should be quite close.

Looking at the application timeline (source), I think your application was viewed as a regular decision timeline vs. an early application deadline, and the early application seems to be an MTAP requirement. As they expected your requirements to be completed the semester before applying, I think they anticipated receiving your transcript with the fall semester classes by the March 1 Early Action deadline. Since you didn’t send them until May they may not have considered your application complete and thus viewed your application as a Regular Deadline application (which would be in-line with when you received notification). Had they considered you an Early Action applicant, you should have received your acceptance in April.

Good catch! That would make sense.
