Hi everyone! I need some help with determining whether or not to apply to some schools as a transfer. The only one I'm definitely applying to is Cornell ILR.

Here are my stats:

high school:
GPA: 4.12/4.21
Rank: 16/330
SATs: 660V/660M
SAT IIs: 740 Writing, 650 History
ECs: really good (4 leadership roles, captain varsity sport, lots of volunteer time, a job, a national business award, all honor societies), felt they were my strongest factor in applying to college as a freshman

current school: SUNY Binghamton
Majors: English, PoliSci
Intended minor: Business
GPA: currently 3.75, could prob raise to a 3.8 by the spring
ECs: internship with a major IB firm in their HR department, internship with a congressman, student government representative, national honor society, 2 other clubs
Coursework: fairly difficult, mostly 200 and 300 level classes

Here are the schools I'm thinking about (I would prob apply as a political science major, except for Cornell):

Cornell ILR
NYU
Dartmouth
UVA
UPenn

Would it be worth it to apply? What kind of chance do I have at these schools??

I don't normally answer these types of posts, but you have a pretty good college GPA and you're taking hard courses, which are 2 things UVa really looks at when admitting transfer students. Plus, you have great extracurricular activities. I think you have a shot at getting into UVa. I had a good friend who transferred from Binghamtom to UVa with similar college stats.

I don't know how UVA admissions are for OOS. Other than that, you don't have any safeties on your list. As long as you would be happy to stay where you are, your list is fine. If you want to transfer for sure, you need some safer schools.

To evaluate your chances, we would need to more about what your state reason will be for transferring, why you chose your current school. It would also help to know where you applied as a Freshman and what your results were. In composing your transfer application, your reasons for wanting to transfer are important, as are professor recs. Good luck.

haha elsijfdl! :) I do currently LOVE my collegiate life, but there are still things about bing that really bother me and I think I could be happier (or just as happy) at a different school.

jmmom, thank you for your advice about finding more safeties. I would be very happy with staying at Bing, so I figured I wouldn't waste time applying to schools that I wouldn't really attend if i was accepted.

reasons for transferring: complete lack of academic advising at Bing (we're not paired with a counselor, and we can't even make appointments with most counselors until junior year), classes being taught by TAs, thus far work at Bing has been pretty unchallenging (even though I have taken several higher level classes)

as a freshman, I didn't apply to Dartmouth or UPenn and I applied to a different school + major in Cornell. I was originally accepted to NYU (but couldn't attend because of personal reasons) and rejected to UVA.

I think your reasons for transfer are sound. I hope you have been able to get know a prof or two well enough for a good rec, or will be able to do that next term. Seminar courses can be good for that. If you haven't, TAs can collaborate with profs on the recommendations, but getting to know a prof or two well, via small classes next term, would be very valuable. Or, taking another class from a prof you respect, could also be good.

high college GPA + high high school record + high SATs + fantastic essays = good shot at Cornell ILR. The only thing that prevents me from saying 'great shot' is the fact that it's a pretty tough program to get into. Attend ILR's transfer day in the fall and write absolutely perfect essays. Based on my experience with working with admissions to ILR, the adcoms seems to favor transfers from Bing.

Thanks for your help, gomestar! I definitely plan on attending ILR's transfer day and talking with some people in admissions! I'm really in love with the school and think it would be such a better fit for me

any other comments on my chances? or anyone have any suggestions for schools?
