I've just finished the first semester of my sophomore year at a state school, and I'm planning to take the Spring semester off in order to work and prepare my transfer materials for Fall 2012. Does anyone know how that would look to a college? Also, what would I enter as?

I have ~60 credits and a ~3.7 GPA, but my SAT scores are a bit on the low side, should I re-take the January SATs? Or will colleges place less consideration on them?

Great recommendations and ECs, grades shown an upward trend, and not asking for FA

I'm looking into:
Cornell (Reach, I know)
UPenn
Johns Hopkins
McGill
Queen's
SUNY Binghamton
NYU

Chances? Thanks!

Since you’re a junior transfer, your high school stats won’t matter as much, but they will still matter enough to make a difference. I think you have a good GPA that will be competitive for most colleges. You should retake the SAT or try and take the ACT if you feel they’re low. For NYU, John Hopkins, UPenn, and Cornell the SAT will matter enough to make a (small) difference. Also UPenn and Johns Hopkins are both bigger reaches than Cornell. If your state school is a SUNY, you should try and apply to a state-school funded Cornell college. Good luck!

Thanks Portmanteau5, but does anyone know how a college views someone taking a semester off for work reasons? How do I explain that to them so it doesn’t seem flaky? Also, chances? :)

Lots of people take time off to work. This is not a big deal. Do not worry about it.
