Thanks trojan.

thanks trojanwannabe..my life is now complete

Wow, there are a lot of impressive gpa's out there. What CCC's do those of you in the 3.7+ range go to?
Since some CCC's have more rigorous curriculums than others, the CCC you attend is critical in the admissions process. I know that here in L.A., if you don't attend SMC, PCC, OCC, or at least Pierce college, you don't have a chance in hell of getting into UCLA. One of my history teachers told me that a 3.8 at West L.A. college is equal to a 3.3 or less at SMC. If you are transferring from a school with a weak curriculum, you gotta have like a 4.0 to be taken seriously. This is what I was told anyway. I'm sure there have been exceptions; though probably not very many.

pirates life, i don't think there is an ounce of truth in ur claims. Thats the biggest ******** i've ever read. All CC are equal.

lol u guys are funny but yea...

good luck to everyone! hope u guys get in and reach ur dreams.

i go to el camino college, and i hear that SMC's bio, chem, and physics dept is weak compared to el co... i guess its all just rumors, but i know several ppl who got into UCLA with a 3.2 from el co.

I go to El Camino college too. what's your major and gpa arch. Goodluck with your admissions decisions arch.

this statistics will be biased i think...
cause first it isn't random, people volunteer to answer
(not everyone wants to reveal their gpa or stats)
and most of people have 3.0 and above
what about those with 3.0 and lower?

Edit: and you don't whether people are telling the truth about their stats or not, like ilovecalifornia

SMC's bio dept is one of the best in the country among CC's. It is way better than El Camino. UCLA students routinely take bio classes at SMC because the program at SMC is cheaper and highly respected. If all CCC's are equal, then how come almost half of all UCLA transfer admits are chosen from SMC. El Camino is decent, but I guarantee that only the very best are admitted to UCLA. What sets SMC apart is the faculty, almost all of them are UCLA or USC grads, some of them actually are professors at UCLA too. These are facts. Don't take my word for it. Check the numbers yourself.

If your friend from El Camino got into UCLA with a 3.2 like you say, then he/she must have chosen a major that wasn't very competitive, or he/she had one hell of story to tell in the open-ended essay.

I'm not trying to dishearten you. Your GPA's are very high, I'm sure you are at least in the 90th percentile at your school. Don't get worried. I only made the point for those applicants whose gpa's pale in comparison to some of yours. The CCC you attend, your gpa, the essays, and how much course work you have completed are all factors. The point is that those of us with less than 3.7 gpa's still have an excellent shot at being excepted to UCB or UCLA. Don't fret.

then how come almost half of all UCLA transfer admits are chosen from SMC

B/c the most people apply from SMC. SMC is also the leader in rejects. It's also the leader is least % addmitted, and guess what its gpa admitted is identical to all other ccc.

Ur theory is completely wrong.

look for urself

BTW, i attend smc and the sciences there are very dificult and profs expect a ton from u. All of them have phD w/ a ton research expirience. My ochem teacher is an mit graduate. there are 2 more mit grads that i know as well.

no no, im not really worrying whether or not i get in. if they dont accept me then hey, they did me a favor, because then i wouldn't be able to do well over there. i think that the reason so many students from SMC transfer to LA is because the population is enormous at SMC. They have many more applicants than el camino and therefore, they SHOULD have more people getting into LA. and about the teachers at elco vs smc, we have teachers from cornell and harvard down to cal state la, and my chemistry professor graduated from cal state la, and he was probably the greatest professor i've had. i dont think the importance lies in the school that the professor graduated from. the way he motivates you is the key, and then you (the student) must work hard and absorb all you can... i'm really not trying to argue, just want to change the idea about community college reps.

sandkicks.. im majoring in Bio, gpa 3.92 with 62 units so far, should be around 76 after transfer. thanks, gluck to you too!

Hey how is that possible?

Note: I'm not questioning whether you are telling the truth or not; i'm just asking that question above out of curiosity because *I wonder if unfortunately we get rejected once from UCLA or UCB since we miss some prereg[s], then can we stay one more year to finish all the preregs and improve the GPA to apply again? *
Is your case a rare one or is it possible that we can apply more than once?

You can't deny that a huge proportion of transfer admits come from SMC. And the avg. gpa you speak of is not specified for each school, so don't try to inflate your point. My theory stands true. A student has a better chance of transferring from the aforementioned schools because they are considered to have more rigorous academic curriculums.

You can absolutely apply more than once. In fact, if all your units are from CC, then you can apply as many times as it takes. I personally know an older woman who transferred to UCLA with 120-something sem. units, and she said they just took her best 60 units and the classes directly related to her major.

The average acceptance rate is 41.82% for all california community colleges (wow that's pretty high! of course that's not taking into account major specifics). There are a lot of schools that have a higher, equal or almost equal acceptance rate than SMC (46.21%), OCC (42.68%) and piece (48.76%). A lot more students just apply from those colleges, but the acceptance rate is about equal throughout the LA area colleges (I wonder why that is?).
