Transfer Stats- Will I get in?

If you have knowledge on how the transfer committee at USC works, please respond to this. I applied to USC as a transfer student to Marshall. I will be a sophomore in the fall. Both my parents attended USC and I recieved a 3.3 GPA this past year at another private University, not a CC. My essay was about a death of someone close to me that happened a year ago.

What do you all think are my chances??? If you have any knowledge about this PLEASE RESPOND! Thanks!

I was admitted as a transfer last year and have pretty good knowledge about how they select and what they look for.

Unfortunately, your chances are pretty slim with a 3.3. GPA, especially applying to Marshall. USC is shrinking their class size and upping their standards this year and subsequent years to come, so it is getting harder to get in every year. Last years average GPA accepted was ~3.6, so expect the average to be slightly higher for you. Unless you have extenuating circumstances or a great hook, your chances look pretty grim. They do not weigh legacy status too heavily either.

BUT you never know. If you wrote a killer application and received great LOR's, and have completed many GE's, your chances may be okay. Not to mention, they still consider your high school record when applying as a sophomore.

If you didn't kick ass in High School, I'd say your chances are very slim for getting into Marshall.

With that said, anything can happen. I know someone who got into Marshall with a 3.4 from a CC and I roomed with a kid who transfered into SC with a 3.0 from a CC when I was there for the summer (he was a photography major, so supplemental materials may have been what got him in.)

I actually got this thing last year when I was rejected that if I get a 3.4 GPA I'm almost guaranteed admission. But I'm worried since I only got a 3.3. Since I was .1 below the requirement do you think they'd still accept me? All the replies have been great though. Keep them coming. Thanks.

I hope you get accepted, because we have similar stats. Keep us posted!

Wasserman,
Did you have one of the "trojan family" meetings with Admissions? I got that letter too, and am meeting with them soon. Can you tell me whether they actually guarantee anything or just say you can reapply and they will reconsider you? Anything else you think is important about the meeting would be helpful.
thanks!

There are 2 different Trojan Family letters they give out. You won't know which one they mean to give you until you go to your meeting. There's one that says if you get a 3.0 or higher for freshman year then you're automatically accepted, no need to fill out an application. The second one, which is the one I got, basically says if you get a 3.4 you're VERY likely to be accepted, but not 100% guaranteed. You still need to fill out an application for this one as well.
You don't really need anything for the meeting. Just know what courses you want to take freshman year at whichever college you're going to and know how many credits you have from before and from what classes (APs, CC courses). I got a 3.3 and I applied to one of their tougher schools (marshall) so it's going to be close call for me. I'll keep you updated on what happens.

i have a 3.552 from UCR ... i wrote really good essays (subjective, i know, but i worked really hard on them) have little extracurriculars.

I did alright in highschool.. had like a 3.4 unweighted and a 1360. I just got a request for my spring transcripts which definitely scares me since im doing horribly this quarter (probably a 3.0) PLEASE LET ME IN USC!!!

they say 3.4 and complete most of the GE categories (1-4, and 6) as well as the writing requirement and diversity requirement. On top of that any courses required by your major.

I completed all of those except category 4 and 5 (because you can only take cat 5 at usc) with a 3.76 my freshman year at cal poly. I had a 3.6 in high school. They didn't request my spring transcripts but I submitted them anyways, my application status was pending until a week after I brought them in. I got an email and then a huge packet in the mail =)

I think your chances with a 3.3 might be slim, especially because they hint towards having a 3.4. I have other friends that transferred in with me last year and they came from schools like UCR, U Hawaii, UCSD and all said that those schools were a joke in comparison to USC. I feel the same way about cal poly. When you're coming to USC it really is a big difference, and the admissions staff knows that, so they weigh heavily on your performance.

One other thing, they are only allowed to admit acertain number of transfers per school. I was one out of less than 100 that got into the engineering school. Marshall would probably be the same considering it is about the same size as Viterbi.

My roomate actually transfered into marshall from Orange Coast College, he had a 3.8. Hope that helps! Good luck!

I roomed with all transfer kids last year. All of them had in the range of 3.6 to 4.0 not to mention other competitive additions (SATs, EC's, etc.). A 3.3 is a close call

I was just admitted to USC undergrad engineering with a 3.3 transfering from another private school... I don't know anybody who went there. SO I think your chances would be fine!

Will you be a sophomore this fall? What was your high school GPA? When did you receive your acceptance letter?

rejected :(

but im appealing

sorry to hear that dude...

did you get a request for grades or were you rejected outright?

I turned in my grades 3 weeks ago. I was flat rejected and I just found out transfers can't appeal. This is rediculous. I received a contract saying I'd be almost automatically admitted with a 3.4 and i got .09 lower than that because of the death of someone close to me. USC can't understand that? That's pathetic in my opinion.

I'm sorry... that really stinks... you should appeal anyways. You never know I guess. Or ask them if they'll consider your appeal for spring admit (even though people can't apply for spring they might admit you for it anyways like they did fo some freshman) good luck. I'm sorry you didn't get in.

wass-

were your spring grades requested - or did you just send them in?

I just sent them in. I had a better GPA in the spring so I wanted them to see that.

Thats what I did too. I didn't get a spring grade request either but I sent my grades anyways. I called today and they said my "letter" is on the way... I'm soooooo nervous

I transferred last year after my freshman year at UCR. I had a 3.5 GPA and applied to Marshall. Heard back about 5 days after I submitted my spring grades (which were requested since I was transferring after 1 year). So...I'm thinking you probably got in since USC pretty much admitted me without really going deeply into my application since I heard back really really quickly. However, I've always kept close contact with them periodically throughout my senior year in high school and my freshman year in college, so they knew that I really wanted to go there and that might have helped. Oh yeah, I was also on the deans list for 2 of the 3 quarters I was at UCR, so that could've also factored in on the decision. SATs were a 1300 and my high school GPA was a 3.4.

Also, I did the whole Trojan family meeting with them after high school and they said the whole if I got a 3.4 I'd pretty much get in...especially since I went to a UC and not a CC so they'd definitely hold more clout to my GPA than if I had gone to a CC.
