Hello, I'm applying as a transfer student and pretty much have my app. done. But I can't decide whether I should apply to Stern or CAS. I'd prefer finance, but I really like the idea of having Wall Street where I'm studying. I'm trying to determine what kind of a chance I have at Stern or if I should just apply to CAS? I feel the gpa drop last semester, switching of majors, and below par SAT II's may hurt my chances for Stern along with the lower acceptance rate. I'm still leaning toward applying to Stern right now. Any advice?

Stats:
Ithaca College:
Currently a sophomore journalism major/econ minor, but I do a good job of explaining why I'm changing majors in my essay
GPA: 3.68 cumulative (1st semester: 3.81, 16 cr., 2nd 3.74, 16 cr., 3rd 3.46, 15 cr.)
Midterm Grades (3.78, 17 cr.)
A's in all my econ and math classes (although I do have a B+ for calc II midterm grade)
Good ECs
Good Essays

High School:
4.0 u/w, ? weighted (4.8ish if I had to guess)
1st in class of 400-500 people (my high school is very strong ~ avg SAT score is below a 1000)
1380 SAT (720 M/660 V)
SAT II's (1C: 660, Wr: 620, US His: 600)
Good ECs

Lacking one pre-req ~ Managerial Accounting
Taking Financial Accounting right now (A for midterm grade ~ perfect score on my midterm test)

I'd go for CAS econ. Remember, transfer admission is always determined by the number of spots available. Stern is a small school, and trust me, they really don't need anymore finance majors, so I'd venture there would be very limited room for transfer (its usually been this way in previous years). CAS should be easier to get into unless the econ. department is filled to the brim, and Stern finance majors start dropping out in droves, which I don't think is going to happen.

You are an alum correct? What do you think of the econ program? Is it more mathematical/analytical or theoretical? Do econ majors still get good internships on Wall Street (I'm assuming so, but curiosity begs me to ask)?

I'm applying to a number of schools and have tended to apply to the business programs of schools that have them although I am applying to an econ program or two.

NYU's econ. dept. is one of the best in the country. Whether its more math or theory depends on your course selection, but I'd venture you'd get a lot of both regardless. And yes, economics majors at NYU do well at placing on wall st...really, really well.

Thanks alot jw. You've definitely helped. I knew space is really limited at Stern, and then my admission would definitely depend heavily on how much space is available. Your comments about the econ department make me feel like I couldn't go wrong with either, so I'm probably better off applying to the one that I have a better shot of getting into.

"Can I transfer to Stern now (as in before September) or only during freshman year???"

No you may not. Even freshmen year or after, transfer to any school is never guaranteed unless you were in GSP. Internal transfers to Stern are rare, but possible, and will be done on a case by case basis.

Do you want to major in econ. or finance? Econ. can be done in CAS, finance you need to be in Stern.
