Transfer Student, Acceptance Probabilities

I am sending in applications for UCs and CSUs that are due nov 31, 2009 for fall '10. My current GPA is a 2.82 ( which is god awful, I know ). I'm raising my GPA since I fumbled the ball in early semesters and do plan on having a
2.95 - 3.0 end of fall '09, 3.0+ end of winter, 3.1+ end of spring. The JC I go to is ranked 2nd in california, Pasadena Community College which is a bonus. I am a political science major with no emphasis in any area. I'm trying to figure out what my chances are for the schools that I am applying too. Also, I tutor for political theory and american government at pasadena city college. I have letters of rec for CSU's from two professors that are in political theory ( my boss ) and international relations class.
I do expect to see an upward trend in my grades, from B/C averages to A/B's per semester. I am applying for EOP as well which is why I have letters of rec. Also my GPA for classes relating to my major is a 3.5, probably going to stay the same after this semester.
Also, I can't tag schools since my math/gpa dont mean requirements left. So that is out the window too. No SAT/ACT scores, I didn't take them in high school.

Pretty much gave you the run down of what I have to work with.
CSUs im applying to: CSUN, SDSU, CSUF, CSULB, CSULA
UCs: UCI, UCR, UCSC, UCLA, UCSD

Obviously my grades are low and the chances of me getting into those higher tier schools is low. Regardless I'd like to hear what are my chances of getting into all those schools.

Please refrain from asking questions as to asking why my grades are so poor. I know, you know, so lets just leave it at that.

CSUs, from what I gather, tend to just do a straight look at GPA ranking. I’m not even certain there is a place to submit recommendations for CSUs or even a place for ECs on the application. You should get the CSU application started (you can start and stop/save it).

So for CSU, you will have the best chance at a CSU that services your local area and if your 2.82 is competitive enough to get in before it fills up from that local service area.

At the UCs, I see them all as extreme reaches. UCR is probably the least competitive and a possibility. But I think you can cross off UCLA and UCSD for certain, especially for PolSci which has a very competitive pool with higher GPA admits overall. I know kids who have transferred into UCSC w/ a 3.0 a few years ago, but it is likely even more competitive with all of the cuts.

My advice is to apply to as many of the schools as you can afford … and make sure you apply to ones that service your local area because you have a better shot there. Also make sure you throw in some of the lower-tiered CSUs as a safety… Sac State or one of the other “Tier 3” CSUs… Bakersfield, East Bay, San Bernadino, San Marcos. Northridge is probably a good safety for you, but no guarantees.

Good luck. It’s a very tough year for transfer students with problematic GPAs.

Yeah, I dug myself a hole on this one. As for letters of recommendation, the EOP program for CSUs require two letters of rec.
