hello friends,

as the title notes, i was admitted as a pre-psychology major, but i want to change to psychobiology. i intend to apply to med school, and psychobiology would allow me to take the necessary prereqs for med school at UCLA, as opposed to taking them at a community college after i gradate.

is this possible? any insight is appreciated.

thanks!

I’m not sure if this applies to psychobiology specifically, but I know for most of the life science majors, they will not let you change majors unless you start in that major. There is a year-long sequence that all students must take the begins in the fall. So I would advise you to call the admissions office and/or the psychobiology department to see if you can switch prior to the beginning of the school year.

If the admissions requirements are significantly different and you did not complete the psychobio prep courses, I would assume they would not let you change majors.

Agreed, you should call the department, and hopefully you’ve taken most of the psychobio/pre-med pre-reqs already, in which case, since psychobiology is housed under the psychology department, I don’t think it should be a problem switching over (as opposed to going from Psych to PhySci for example).

I got admitted as pre-psychobiology, and I’m switching to neuroscience if I can. So hey, there’s a spot for you if it works out for me.

However, the neuroscience adviser told me “non life science majors cannot switch to into life science majors.” Definitely contact the dept. They’ll most likely tell you to go over it with your assigned adviser at orientation, and if they give you the ok, to contact them after.

According to this, psychology is considered a life science major so there shouldn’t be an issue there.
