Transfer Student. Chance Me for Berkeley

Transferring from a California Community College.

G.P.A 3.75 ( Since starting as a college freshman I have had all A's but I took a Spanish 2 class as a Jr. In High School and got a C , should be able to get this to 3.9+ by transfer time)

IGETC complete
Psychology Major. Major prep on assist.org will be finished.
TAP Program ( 15 honors units, not sure if this is applicable to Berkeley, I believe it is mainly for UCLA)

Psi Beta Honor Society
Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society
Some Community Service (not much)
Psychology Club

I also am planning on doing Pre-med if that is relevant.

bump to the top . : )

any commentary is appreciated, thanks guys.

you’ll probably get in…god knows they let pretty much anyone in when it comes to transfer admissions

^that’s obviously not true

I don’t know how transfer admissions work but I wish you good luck.

@123456789bc

That’s true they are very lenient with transfers. Are you mad?

not mad, just disgruntled I guess.

I personally would like to see how competitive community college transfers are in basic math/science/CS classes and SAT tests when compared to freshmen admits or transfers from another UC.

I would bet that they are significantly less competitive.

Why does this matter? Did a transfer steal an internship or a job from you? Do you blame the 2011 rank drop on transfer students? Do you feel the same way about the non-traditional transfer students who are 30+ years or are you just disgruntled at the young transfers?

it matters because of many valid reasons that I will not discuss here today. If you want further explanation, i urge you to read through the “subpar” thread that you bumped.

I have better things to do with my post-midterm friday afternoon than argue why “significantly less competitive” students (as you put it) should be in the same institution as significantly more competitive students.

Are you a freshmen? Just curious. In any case, you need to get over yourself 123456789bc because I know transfer students that will humble you. As with every population, there are bell curves.

OP, your chances look good. I hope you never bump into 123456789bc. Don’t let anyone cheat you out of your pride and success.

Go Bears (this includes Transfer-Bears)!

"123456789bc you’ll probably get in…god knows they let pretty much anyone in when it comes to transfer admissions "

lol do you realize how wrong you are?

I have so many friends with 3.8/3.9’s that got rejected from L&S trying to transfer. Transfers have something like a 15% acceptance rate for econ. Psychology is pretty impacted too, another person I know with a 3.92 got denied.

On top of that Haas has like a 4% acceptance rate, but that’s just because they DQ anyone missing any breadths. More like a 25% acceptance rate if you have met all the requirements.

some transfer student **** you off or something, buddy?

to the op:

if you write a great essay and have solid EC’s a 3.9 will definitely give you a great shot. you’d be better off posting in the transfer forum in the future rather than here. this forum seems to get its panties in a bunch over transfers, probably because of how hard they had to work in HS to get in. I guess I can’t blame them for that entirely.

Ithink you will have a ver ygood chance as long as you can get 3.9+ by transfer time and keep those honor society activities!~

Thanks to everbody for the responses. I will continue to work on my G.P.A, extracurriculars, and essays and hopefully have a chance to get into Berkeley. I have a pretty interesting story of a hardship I went through and will focus my essay on. If any of you would like to read my essay and critique it let me know and I will send it to you when it is finished.

Thanks again everybody.

this made me lol :D

Come on, you guys aren’t 12 years old…having “friends” and* “knowing people” * doesn’t mean anything more than the fact that you will proffer anecdotal evidence in lieu of something with substance.

This is incorrect. Scroll down to “social sciences” http://students.berkeley.edu/files/Admissions/12626_5.Info_TransAdm.pdf</a>. The actual percent is somewhere around 22% and 23%.

that’s terrible. A majority of haas applicants don’t even have their requirements fulfilled by the time they apply. But for those that do…they stand a 1 in 4 chance of acceptance to one of the most prestigious business schools in the wold.

OP…i would suggest you check out the UC Transfer forum. You’ll find more people in your situation (and in general) who would serve as a better resource for you.

You’re the child in this conversation.

You’re a freshman aren’t you? That’s cute, you have much to learn. I can’t say I blame you for feeling this way because I was arrogant before as well. My advice to you is to remember your outlook now, and tell me if you don’t feel different in a couple of years. You will be humbled. Things change when you step foot into the real world and you’re not calling your mom every month for rent/food money. When everyone around your work are ivy league grads and they look at your education as if you got it at Cal State U. Sacramento, you never had the fight that kind of perception yet because you are still worrying about standard deviations and what you got compared to the mean.

Most likely though, you would never say these things to another student in person. So you are really just a bit** when it comes down to it, for now at least.

ROFL

no, I’m not a freshmen. Please don’t jump to any absurd conclusions without knowing any facts (then again, we don’t really require community college kids to know too much) :D

(but if I was a freshmen…would that make me any less correct? does my age change the facts? does being 20 years old mean being more right than if I was 19?)

lol considering I haven’t looked at those numbers in over a year I would say my 15% is pretty close, and to be fair a I supplemented my anecdotal evidence with numbers, albeit numbers that were slightly off. not only that but in the process I counter ■■■■■■■ you, forcing you to spend your own time searching up statistics and create what you thought was a valid counter argument. so you can resort to name calling all you want to try to create a sense of false superiority; but I will just laugh at how easy it is to make ■■■■■ jump from logic to personal attacks when their argument is crushed.

the point remains, Berkeley’s not an easy school to transfer to- so stop crying.

to the op:

Berkeley loves non traditional students, and when they are reading the personal statement they like to see that you overcame some sort of difficulty. just don’t make it all about the hardship- make it about how you overcame the hardship and what you gained from it. if you do that and your gpa is a 3.9 I’d say 99% chance of getting in for psych. good luck.

Chance me!
