Transfer Student Chance!

Hey all, I'm in the process of trying to find the BEST school I can go to. I would love to know the top schools you guys think I could get into along with whats pretty realistic. Here's my stats. Thanks!

High school
GPA - 2.0 (yep)
SAT - 1740
EC's - participated in shooting, directing, and producing about 500 tv productions at my high school, track and field soph year, and a shot a community service documentary my senior year - overall, I was not a very good student in high school.

CC Stats
GPA - 3.9
EC's - VP of fundraising for PTK, Treasurer of my business club (running for VP in the Fall), raised $1000 for the American Red Cross for the Japan Earthquake victims, spearheaded a ton of PTK stuff, currently interning at an insurance company in lower NYC (for about year now), deans lists, math honors society, recipient of a scholarships, and maybe more.

I want to study finance with an eye on wealth management or investment banking (more M&A stuff). Thanks!

Would likely need more information to provide you a more in-depth answer. The courses you’ve taken in college, the number of semesters you’ve been enrolled and the credit load per semester would be helpful. A 3.9 GPA is strong but if it’s based only a few credits/courses it’s obviously not as strong as if it were based on four full-time semesters. Additionally, for those whose high school records would not have been competitive for admission to W&M generally need to show several semesters of academic improvement to be competitive for transfer admission.

Anyone interested in majoring in business at W&M, should complete the pre-reqs prior to enrolling at W&M (micro and macroecon, stats, calc, financial accounting and managerial accounting). Additionally, remember that applying to the Mason School of Business is a separate application process. Once admitted to W&M, those who will have junior standing and who have completed the pre-reqs can then apply to the Mason School of Business. Admission to W&M does not confer admission to the School of Business.

Feel free to provide more information on your college record so that we can be more responsive.

I hope this is sufficient. My GPA actually calculates to 3.879, apologies for the error. Thank you!

Also, this fall semester I will be taking bus stat, bio 102 with lab, micro econ, and englis lit.

Looks like you’re still missing the accounting courses for the W&M Business School pre-reqs so you might want to consider taking those classes. Also we recommend a stats course through the math department rather than business stats as that doesn’t always transfer.

Instead of taking lit this semester because you’ve already taken 2 lit courses we’d recommend a physical science or another history courses since you’re a bit lighter in those two areas of the curriculum. Or continue with your Spanish since you will need to complete some Spanish at W&M to graduate (unless you completed four years in HS).

Aside from that and the communications courses which are unlikely to transfer to W&M (since we don’t have a communications department), your course selection is solid.

Hope this helps.

Just for a clarification - all of my applications, recommendations, etc should be towards The College of William and Mary undergraduate admissions, NOT the Mason School of Business, correct? I have no interaction with them until I get my decision from W&M.

You are correct. Everything is submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admission as all students (freshmen and transfers) apply only to W&M; not to a specific program/major. If we admit you, you will then receive notification of whether you’re eligible to apply to the School of Business (if you’ve taken the pre-reqs and have junior standing) and then how to do so.
