Transfer Student Chances- Smith, Wellesley and others

I know I just posted this in the chances forum but I thought I might get some answers over here for my chances as a transfer student!!

I am currently a freshmen at St. John's college. St. John's is a great books program and is very unique. Unfortunately its just not working out for me, so I am looking to transfer to another liberal arts college or possibly university with a more tradition and varied program. I am also looking to major in History and Government. My future career goal is to be a lawyer or political speechwriter.

The schools I am looking at so far are
-Smith (top choice)
-Wellesley (other top choice)
-Mount Holyoke
-Davidson
-William and Mary
-Georgetown

And here are my stats
High School GPA: 3.8 9 (u/w) 4.7 (w)
HS class rank: 24/330
SAT: reading 710 math 510 writing 620 Really bad, I know, see note below
APs: 6 AP classes scoring three 4's and three 5's
HS Extra-Curricular: very involved with Speech and Debate, captain of the LD, Expos, OO and PPI divisions. varsity letter. Qualified for the national tournament in LD and OO. 3rd place at state in Expos as well as many other wins on league level

Note on the SAT: St. John's didn't require the SAT so I didn't take it. Then after I was admitted and enrolled in St. John's I had to take it for some reason I'm still not quite sure about. I had one days notice and didn't study at all. My PSAT was 202 so I could improve that score.

However I know Smith is SAT optional, they also have an earlier transfer dead line than other college. Is it worth cramming for the SAT so I can send it to smith or should I wait until I can really take my time and study. Are my high school and college records alone good enough for Smith?

College GPA: unknown, I'm guessing anywhere from 3.3-3.9
College Extra-Curricular: -International Relations Study Group
- Tech and costumes for school musical
College Classes: I don't take normal classes but they will transfer as Ancient Greek grammar and prose, Euclidean Geometry, Astronomy, General Biology, Chemistry Foundations of Atomic Theory, History, Classical Literature and Philosophy.

The reason I don't know by GPA is because they wont disclose grades until the end of the semester and even then grade are completely subjective and entirely up to the discretion of the teacher since there is no objective work like papers and tests to grade us off of. I have a lot of problems with this system since I think as a student it takes away my ability to control my educational future and improve myself. This is part of the reason I am transferring.

So if you all could give me some guidance as to what college I have the best chance at or what I could do to make myself a more competitive transfer applicant let me know! Also should I take the SAT? I know some of the schools I picked are SAT optional.

Thank you so much for all your help!!!

What is your safety option? Would you stay at St. John if you don’t get in anywhere else, or will you take a gap year and reapply? Are you leaving St. John at the end of this semester, or are you planning to finish the full year?

As for the ACT/SAT, contact each of the places on your list, and ask if they require this of transfer applicants. If they do require it, ask about exam dates. It is possible that the optimum date for you would be an ACT rather than SAT, so take a quick look at an ACT prep book. For good advice on doing exam prep on your own, see: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/68210-xiggis-sat-prep-advice.html

If you don’t want to take the ACT/SAT at all, look through the full list of no-exam and exam optional schools at [The National Center for Fair & Open Testing | FairTest](http://www.fairtest.org) You might find something that will work for you.

Wishing you all the best!

P.S. If you like Mt. Holyoke, Smith, & Wellesley, why not Bryn Mawr? What about Sweet Briar or Agnes Scott? For that whole list see [The Women’s College Coalition](http://womenscolleges.org/)
