It’s a lot harder to play the chance game with transfer students. Write a stellar essay. Get your friends to look it over. Get your writing center to look it over. Get your dog to look it over. NU doesn’t release transfer statistics in part because they’d be pretty much meaningless (comparing GPAs between different schools is comparing apples and oranges).

That said, your stats are better than mine, and I got in as a transfer a couple years ago. That means nothing, but it may be encouraging. ;)

^Actually NU released their transfer stats for the past several years. Last year they accepted 16% of their applicants (195/1225). That said, I agree that comparing GPAs between different schools is difficult, but the fact that he’s from USC will give him an advantage.

I should clarify: an admissions officer told me while I was applying that they do not keep or release statistics on GPAs and SATs for transfer applicants. I concur that USC is a good thing, though. Nobody’s for certain in the applications game, so it’s a lot of work no matter where you come from.

It’s a bit sobering, though, because I haven’t looked at the statistics for 2009-10: I got in on 16% chances? Whoa.

^In 07-08, they accepted about 35% of their applicants. Not sure why it was abnormally high that year but it has fluctuated between 15 and 20 percent in most other years. I don’t know when you transferred but if you’re graduating in 2012, I’d guess you were part of that 07-08 transfer class. I wish I was too :/

I believe that once you meet certain academic standards, the most important parts of your application become your recommendations (what are you like in class?) and a detailed essay on why NU would be a good fit (explaining both how you would benefit from and contribute to NU).

well… i visited Northwestern this winter break and my essay was focused on the trip and how I realized it was the college that fit me the best with its atmosphere and environment. Well I can’t put my essay here, but I thought it was really good! haha

I know essays/recommendations play a huge part in the admissions process, but I just wanted to know whether I have a good chance or where I stand as an applicant just by looking at my stats, extracurricular etc. :)

Incorrect; I transferred winter 2010 (the freshman graduating in 2012 started in '08).

Discussion, sorry I can’t be of more help. I don’t really know much about the transfer process so I can’t chance you.

In that case sirsteveh, you were admitted on 15-20% chances. I hope I can say the same come June :)
