Transfer student chances...

I'm a first year student at the University of Minnesota in their honors IT program and I'm extremely dissatisfied with the program and the people so far. I wanted to know what my chances would be to transfer into Carnegie Mellon's Computer Science school next fall. By the time I'm done with freshman year, I should have junior standing, be done with calc 4, taken all introductory basic science courses, including Organic Chemistry, and with the way things are going right now, It looks like I'll have a 4.0 before it's all said and done. I guess my two driving questions are:

1) What are my chances?
2) If the chances are slim, what other schools (with a very good computer science department) would I have a better shot of getting in to?

Man, I am in the same spot as you... I really want to tranfer to this college also. But my major is business and my school is called Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), have anyone ever heard about? I would like my chances to go to Carnegie Mellon as a transfer...

JoshFord and germel:

Can you tell me what displeases you abou thte people at your specified universities? I can give you a good idea if you'll find different people here or not.

JoshFord: seems to me like you have good chances.

Dear Josh,
What I dont like here is not people. Is the fact that I want to go a better college that challenges more academiccaly. Do you really think a student from FDU can tranfer to Carnegie Mellon's as a transfer?? Man, your opinion is very important for me

I definitively want to TRANSFER to a great school. But I have some problems. First, I do not know with schools are great that is why I am asking for a list, I am a foreigner. Second, I must be realistic I am Hispanic, from Brazil and here in Fairleigh Dickinson University my GPA is around 4.0, and I am a freshman. I do not know if they will accept me because of my SATs. My problem is the SATs, I did it twice, in the second one I scored: CR 490 MATH 600 WRT 380 and in the first one: 540, 570 and 400. And my other problem is that I am current in FDU, and nobody knows this college.

SO PLEASE COULD ANYONE MAKE ME A LIST OF 50 TOP BUSINESS SCHOOL.

And if someone know with GREAT business school I can to transfer for because of my bad SATs and the bad school I am now in.

THANKS A LOT !!! I NEED ANSWERS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

joshford, I think your best bet might be to call the school and see how many transfers they actually take, if any, into computer science. One problem is the size of the program, only about 120 in a class, and most of them stay and graduate with CS degrees, so it doesn't leave a lot of room.

If you're interested in an IS major that might be a little easier to transfer into, it's not as selective, and a bit different from pure CS, but the CMU IS program is also top notch. My son was an IS major at CMU who picked up CS as his second major...just mentioning as a possibility.

You didn't mention why you are dissatisfied with Minn's program. If it's the ability of those around you, either classmates or faculty, I can guarantee that would not be the case at CMU.

geromel, I'm from NJ and everyone I'd think here has heard of FDU. Yes the SAT's would be a problem for you. But as you get farther removed from high school, they become less important, then college grades and activities become more important. Transfer colleges would look differently at a 4.0 or near that after 2 years than they would after just a semester or a year so staying at FDU a little longer might be a consideration. At this point I think a school like Tepper at CMU would be a big stretch but who knows. You might think more about great schools still in the top 50 but not top 10 or 20. Examples: Boston U, Syracuse, UPitt, USouth Carolina, Wake Forest, Case Western, UMd, Penn State. I don't know the rank but how about Rutgers (more name recognition that FDU). You can find the rankings in USNews 2006 edition or search these archives, I've seen them posted on CC.

Good luck to both of you.

first, i believe tepper is a closed transfer campus, meaning you can't transfer into the business program from another school. second, its really hard to transfer into here because they only accept so many transfers per year. call the school and check on the stats. its really hard to say. good luck tho... oh and CS here is insane. a lot of people drop the program because its so labor intensive. honestly think about how much time you're willing to put into it, because 4am nights aren't all that rare around here. IS is a good mix between cs and having a life. less programming, more technicality. just popping that in for 2 cents.

At my school, I actually asked the cmu representative about that. He said that you can transfer into tepper from another school. However, tepper reserves most of its space for transfers within the school, so it's difficult for outsiders. I think he said that students attending cmu have around 60% chance of getting in to tepper.

transfer into scs is very hard. there arnt many spaces to begin with and internal transfers come first.

I may consider trying to get into HS&S, after getting rejected from TSB ED I and then do an internal transfer to TSB. But I don't know if I'm all that desperate. Getting rejected twice wouldn't be fun.
