Transfer Student Dorms

I'm hopefully transferring to Howard this fall, and I was just wondering what to do about housing. I'm gonna send in my housing application ASAP, because I've heard of and experienced Howard's... uhh... disorganized administration, and I definitely don't want to be without housing this fall. I've heard that Meridan Hall is where it's at, but I'm going into my third year, and I don't want to be the only third year student there. I know about Cook Hall, but that seems a little too chill for me. (I'm coming from a small private Christian school, so I'm looking for a little more excitement) Do you guys know what dorms would be best? I don't think I want a single so I could meet more people, and I might not have the credits to get into West Towers.
Thanks!

Hi Ninalove13:

:) There aren’t a whole lot of dorm choices at Howard, so your decision will depend entirely on your taste.

Meridian- Is said to be the “most social” of the dorms, but that might be subject to interpretation? Meridian is about 1 mile away from the main campus (not too far away) and shuttle service is provided for students. If cost is a factor in your decision, rooms at Meridian range from $2,826.00 (double-full bath with a/c) to $4,005.00 (single, with full bath) rates per 2010-2011 housing guide. (rates subject to change). Meridian is co-ed, and offers kitchens in each suite as well as a convenience store and lounge for residents. *You might want to inquire if a/c is provided in ALL suites?

Howard Towers West- Located on the main campus and is a much newer building than Meridian. *More centrally located. HTW is specifically for Juniors, Seniors, and Honor Students. If Howard Towers West is your first choice, then you should apply for housing there and see if your choice is honored. If cost is a consideration in your decision, triple studios run $3,152.00 per semester with double studios costing $4,071.00 per semester- according to 2010-2011 housing guide. More than 800 students reside at Howard Towers West (about 200 more than Meridian), so you should make a whole lot of new friends at either location. There are kitchens in each suite, as well as a residence lounge. *You might want to inquire if a/c is provided in ALL suites?

Bethune Annex- Female-only dorms. Females Freshman-Seniors reside at The Annex, although there are probably more Freshman students at Bethune than upper classmen. Considered by many to be the “nicest” of the dorms, The Annex has its own Cafeteria and lounge area and offers a/c in all of their units. Doesn’t sound like you’re considering The Annex, but it’s facilities are highly regarded. If you’re contemplating purchasing a “meal plan” for the year, you can choose a dorm like The Annex that provides same.

Meridian and the Howard Towers West, offer varied amenities and suite arrangements. You should consider which of the two best suit your preferences? If you have the time/monies to plan a visit to Howard University in the near future, you would have a much better idea of the locations/offerings of both Meridan and The Towers. A vist would really help you make your decision. If a visit isn’t possible, make your selection based on the dorm which more completely satisfies your individual needs.

Congratulations !

I must say that Meridian Hill Hall was a great choice for me. I was an RA there and loved every moment of Meridian Hill Hall. It is just steps away from Adams Morgan (section of DC that has bars etc). It is the most social of the dorms and I think anyone would love to live there. Do not worry about having a single room; you will still meet a lot of people. Trust me; avoid having a roommate if you can. That’s advice coming from Universal University – It applies to all colleges and universities. Congratulations on The Mecca and I know you will love it.
