Transfer Student Housing Questions

I’m going to be transferring to UCSC in the fall from a community college, and I’m trying to get my housing/college choice figured out.

Is it very common for transfers to live on campus? Do they typically live in Transfer specific dorms/floors, in on-campus apartments, in the general dorms, or off-campus?

What should I know about UCSC as a transfer? What is campus life like for a transfer?

I am not sure what the policies are, but I can say that I have met a couple transfer students that live in the apartments on campus... so I guess it is possible, but I do not know if these students were just lucky.

Being a transfer student one day myself, a friend of mine that transfered the year before gave me a couple of recommendations.

The first was to ask to be placed with students that are not just transfers. He said that because the ones he was with didn't really do much. This, however, could have been that case.

The second was to be in the dorms rather than apartments. This, again, could just purely be his experience when it came to apartments vs. dorms. I guess in his case the freshman in the dorms were somewhat more active than the transfers.

In addition, it could be just because it was from one of quieter(or at least quieter from my experiences) colleges, Crown.

All in all, I think it really just depends on how much you are willing to get out there and get involved, and what you want. There are so many things going on that you have the chance to participate in. It just all depends if you leave your room or not.

I personally want to live on campus in an apartment, but with a 7-day dining hall plan. At least that way I'd have the option to cook if I choose to.
