<p>Before I officially vacate the CC boards, I was wondering if someone might be able to alleviate my fears regarding transfer housing. I live in NYC, so I understand that may count against me, but the whole point behind transferring was so that I could be a presence on campus and be part of a community…are there any transfer students or parents of transfers that can help me understand the reality behind the ‘housing is not guaranteed’ stipulation? </p>

<p>It means that if they can’t find space for you within existing housing, you won’t be able to live in Barnard housing until such space opens up. If they don’t have housing available in the fall, I would suggest that you ask to be on a waitlist, as something may open up in the spring. You will probably have better chances if you are willing to take a double or live in Hewitt – many students do not want to live in the quad because of the required meal plan…</p>
<p>My daughter (regular student) had to go on a housing waitlist for both her sophomore and junior years because housing so was tight – but she was guaranteed housing, and he was holding out for a non-quad single. Housing did open up for her – and her junior year she mentioned something to me about the possibility of changing rooms early in the semester – as apparently there are still openings coming up a few weeks down the line. So its also possible that even if they don’t have a room available at the beginning of the term, something will open up a few weeks later.</p>
<p>But the reality for my daughter was that housing was tight even for students with guaranteed housing status. I think one year, in order to make room for the sophomores, they changed their rules to encourage more juniors to consider living off campus – one issue at Barnard is that financial aid ordinarily will not subsidize off campus housing, so even students who would consider moving off campus may have to stay for financial reasons.</p>

<p>Pretty much everything is counting against me: I live in NYC so I do have a house there, but we’re selling it to pay for school and my mom lives in florida. I transferred from a commuter school so being on campus is such a priority for me…do you think calling and telling them my situation might help at all?</p>
<p>bwahbabe, I do not see how calling them could hurt you. At least you could talk it over, explain your situation and get an idea of how tight things are with housing this year…</p>

<p>Bwaybabe, I’m sorry I didn’t see this earlier as I could have spared you some worry. My d is a transfer student as are many of her Barnard friends. They were all assigned on campus housing and there was no problem at all with it. It does mean that you will have to wait til the bitter end to find out where there are spaces but they will find you a place. My d was housed in a suite with non-transfers and was very happy with the arrangement. I hear that there were issues in years past but it hasn’t been a problem for the past few anyway.</p>
