I applied to transfer this Fall as a Computer Science major. I feel pretty confident, but I’m still worried because of my high school gpa and a W I chose to take.
HS: 3.1 unweighted/ 3.5 weighted GPA (no excuses, just didn’t have my head in the game in early highschool)
SAT: 1830
ACT: 30
College: 3.89 GPA. 57 credits completed (15 are from AP/IB). Will have my AA this May. Got A’s in every class so far except one B in Calc II, and one ‘W’ in Physics 1 (It was a Saturday, 9am-3pm course, and right before I started the semester my grandmother, who raised, me passed away, so I basically had to deal with losing my last parental figure, driving back and forth between school and home all the time to move all of my belongings out of the house, and eventually not having a house to come home to anymore, and it took a big toll on me and I was just pretty distraught over it and couldn’t focus in school well) (I included that in my statement of intent on the application, but in a less wordy “woe is me” type of way, and explained how I continued to study the material throughout the semester and am prepared to do well in it this time)
Am I worrying too much? My test scores are in the school’s range (even though they don’t hold too much weight as a transfer) and I consider my college GPA to be pretty good, but those highschool grades (even though they too don’t hold as much weight as a transfer) and that ‘W’ are givin’ me the heebie-jeebies.
UF doesn’t care about your high school grades, they only need your HS transcripts to verify you’ve met the foreign language requirements. Don’t worry about it. The same with your test scores. Your COLLEGE GPA is great, and for CS, I don’t think you need to worry about a single W in physics. As long as you did fine the 2nd time, the W will not matter.
Just posting to say, your application looks just like mine… I also applied to the COE for Computer Science and I had an ‘F’ in physics when I took it in Germany (Didn’t care about it, since I already got accepted in the US, so I was bored until I was able to start there), but now I am scared since UF did want my transcripts from Germany -.- (I did my AA completely in the US)
GPA’s are about the same, and I was so happy to randomly read some weeks back, that on the critical tracking courses they only take the 2nd attempt when the first was a ‘W’ or less than a ‘C’, so my ‘F’ would get replaced by an ‘A’ \o/
So I wouldn’t worry too much You are probably more likely to get accepted than me anyways.
One thing I forgot to mention: The college asks for 6 of 7 prereqs competed ‘at the time’ of applying:
Chem I
Calc I, II, III
Physics I, II
Programming Fundamentals (Taken at UF Only)
First, why is Programming Fundamentals a prereq if you can only take it at UF? So they’re basically saying to apply with 6 of 6 prereqs done?
Second, if you’re applying in the Spring semester for Fall semester, and already have the 6 of 6 prereqs as the college says you must, what do they expect you to be doing in the Spring, just sitting around and doing nothing? Taking random classes?
I applied with only 3 prereqs done (Chem I, Calc I, Calc II), so that also has me a little worried, but other people have claimed they applied with less than 6 and gotten in so
I wonder the exact same thing every single time I look at the Requirement sheet…
Especially with Programming Fundamentals I it doesn’t make much sense…
I wouldn’t worry too much if I were you. I don’t think Computer Science is one of the programs that gets slammed, and if you take all the courses by the time you apply I don’t think it will be a problem. All you can be compared to are other students who are in the exact same situation as you.
The only class that I would think that could be a problem is Physics I, since you’d also need Physics II.
@BlackMetal I’m in the same boat…kind of. I’m applying for Fall 2015 for DAS but thats a Fall only acceptance major. I currently have 2/6 prerequisites done but by the time fall starts I’ll have 4/6. If I don’t get in for fall, what do they expect me to do for a full year? Waste money on random classes??
@Test90 yes, I stated I will be taking Physics II over the summer so it is accounted for.
@andcc23 If I were to be denied and they specifically stated it was due to lack of completed prereqs and basically said to finish them and then apply again, I would most likely finish them, move there anyway and work full-time in the Fall, and then just apply again for the Spring. shrugs it would be better than sitting around doing nothing
