Hello all...

I'm a transfer student looking at moving on in 2008 and it looks like I'll be staying in Illinois. My current GPA is 3.8/4.0 and I've been fairly involved with ECs at my CC. I'm considering Loyola or Depaul but I'd love to look at NW or UChicago if I could get in AND fund either. I was hoping a few posters would offer feedback on my situation?

Thanks,

Matt

Your GPA looks good for Northwestern and UChicago, but we’d need more info.

Thanks for the response…I’d be glad to provide more info. What information would you need?

I currently attend a large community college in Central Illinois…I am the communications officer for the school’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa…I was recently nominated to be one of the school’s two (of 13,000) student representatives to the All-USA Academic Team…and I’m in the process of developing a school-wide human-capital-bank for community service use. I have also developed a new scholarship for re-entry students at the college and I should have raised approximately $5,000 for the fund prior to our May graduation.

As for stuff outside of school…I have eight years of sales experience ranging from telemarketing to national business development for sales of server based proprietary ad-creation tools to corporations such as Lexus. In addition, I have recruited for a large manufacturing corporation in the area in the engineering and IT fields. Unfortunately, I am currently bartending my way through school.

I will graduate with an A.A.S. in Communication with a focus on Journalism and I’m considering going on to an International Studies/Public Policy program with a minor in French or Russian (or possibly public relations).

Hope that was enough (and not too much) info.

Thanks for the consideration.

You look like a fine candidate for Northwestern, especially their School of Education and Social Policy; I believe a SESP major can add the IS adjunct major. But I don’t know anything about FA for transfers.

I would love to go to NW or UChicago but I have no idea how I’d fund either. I’m finding that most second tier LAC’s (I’m talking about schools like Loyola or Depaul) offer huge transfer and PTK scholarships but institutions like UChicago and NW almost ignore transfer students with regards to financial aid.

How large is the life-long impact of attending Loyola rather than Northwestern? Is it worth saving $8k per year for 2-3 years? They don’t make guidebooks that answer questions like that…
