Hi guys, I am currently enrolled at Harper College, a community college in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, studying geology and was wondering what people knew comparing UCSB, OSU and CSU. Whether the comparisons be along the lines of which is a better research school, better social life, which is easiest/hardest to transfer to, and which looks better in the eyes of future oil/gas company employers is something i would like the know. Anything that people know about them will be most helpful and ideal.
Generally you can find the transfer acceptance rates in a school’s “Common Data Set” I know for some schools you transfer specifically to a major and that can make it more competitive but I doubt that’s the case for geology.
UCSB’s overall transfer acceptance rate: 46.91%
OSU’s: 85.96%
CSU Fort Collins: 65.83%.
I would imagine UCSB gets the best recognition out of those 3 in general
If you go to UCSB and you want to be social, be prepared to be thrust into Isla Vista’s overbearing go hard or go home party lifestyle.
Are you prepared to pay huge fees for those schools?
The vast majority of transfers at UCSB are those from California community colleges that have transfer agreements with UCSB. So that transfer acceptance rate may not be reflective of how easy it is to get into UCSB for an OOS student.
Another thing to consider about UCSB: it may not be possible for you to finish your Bachelor’s in 2 years. You will almost certainly lose some credits in the transfer AND the school is now facing huge budget shortfalls which will affect your ability to get the classes you need to graduate.
So those huge fees aunt bea mentioned above – count on paying them for more than 2 years at UCSB – over $58,000 per year.
Yes, the money is not an issue. I’m planning on living at homethe next years to immediately pay off the loans for the name brand schools
Hey man I know it’s late. Awesome to see others from Illinois CC’s looking at UCSB. I currently attend Lincoln College down in Lincoln, Illinois. I heard transferring to all UC’s are extremely hard from out of State transfers. I’m a freshman and am strongly considering going to a califnornia community college next year to help my chances because It’s always been a dream of mine to go to school in California. As for rankings UCSB is the best on the list out of overall school, not sure on the other factors. I’d assume it’d have a pretty good social life plus imo the weather is a big draw, I’m sure you know the feeling with the winters we get here. Anyway, I was also considering UC Davis and UCLA and maybe Berkeley, let me know any updates!
have you been researching decent California CC’s along with its price tag? And do you believe that UCSB would increase my chances if I went to the California CC for only a semester?
@ksadowski45, you wouldn’t be able to transfer after only one semester at a CCC.

There is a hierarchy of CCC coursework that needs to be accepted. The UC’s have to evaluate your previous coursework taken at your present college. They can choose to accept or not accept your previous coursework taken OOS.
