Transfer student: On campus vs off living

I plan on transferring to OSU in fall 2014. I am having trouble deciding if I want to live on or off campus. I figure it would be easier to meet people on campus but have heard both transfer students live off. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on which is better? Also what dorms are good for transfer students? I was thinking I wanted a suite style dorm. Also is there anyway to connect with future transfer students to try and find a roommate for on or off campus?

Thanks for your help!

I’m a transfer student starting this Fall as well. I decided to live off campus mostly because I already have a friend in Columbus who needs to move out by the end of the summer and we’re going to get a place together. I also decided to live off campus because I feel like there’s more freedom. If you live on campus, you’re constantly surrounded by other students and school activities and whatnot. By living off campus, you can choose your neighborhood, what kind of apartment you want, how far you want to live, etc. Since my roommate is already done with school, she doesn’t want to live extremely close to campus because many people party on the weekends and it can get pretty loud so we have decided to live close enough to still be within biking/walking distance, but live far enough to not be surrounded by partying college kids. It’s really nice when you have options.

I would say that I think if you want to meet people, definitely live in the dorms. However, the dorms are also typically more expensive. Money is an issue for me, so living off campus is cheaper. If money isn’t an issue for you, then I would suggest living in the dorms for a real college experience. Also, it would be easier to get to classes, participate in clubs/activites, etc.

I think if you look on the OSU website there are ways of getting in contact with the dorm/housing advisors and finding other people who want a roommate.

If it wasn’t mandatory for freshman to live in dorms, our son would be in an apartment for sure!
