Transfer Student or Freshmen out of school for two years?

I graduated high school back in 2011 and have been taking a few classes every semester at my local community college, but not so many that it would be considered a full course load. Now I'm back to apply to 4 year schools and on the applications they ask if I'm a transfer student or a freshmen (credit wise I'm assuming) that's been out of high school for 2 years or more. Which should I put? Does it really matter? Is there some quota that needs to be filled for both of them? Info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Since you have taken college courses you are considered a transfer student. It does matter which one you put on your application.

The exact standard varies from one four-year college to another. Some will consider you a transfer applicant if you have earned a single college credit after finishing high school, while others will still consider you an applicant for freshman admission if you’ve earned a fairly small number of credits (usually fewer than 12).

There are two key points here:

You can’t just choose. You have to follow the protocols of the university or four-year college that you’re applying to.

You need to find out the policies of the specific universities or colleges that you’re applying to, because there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.

Sikorsky has it right, although some schools still permit you apply as a fr if you have less that a full year of post-HS college coursework (by their definition of full year).

You MUST go to each college website and read their policy; and yes, it does matter.

SupremeLogo,

Your CC probably has a Transfer Advisor. Make an appointment with that person to go over your coursework so far, and to talk about your options for transferring. If you are close to finishing an associates degree, you might find out that you have better options if you do that.

I guess maybe it would help if I gave a little more info on myself. I’m currently enrolled in CC for the spring semester, but only taking 2-3 courses, which will put me at only about 20-26 credits completed.

The particular school is UPitt, if that makes a difference. But I will make an appointment with my Advisor and will look into Pitt’s policy online in the mean time. If there’s any more info or suggestions, feel free to post them. Thanks for the responses!
