Hi, I am currently going to a community college, signing up for college under as a Psychology major. However, I have no interested in psychology and had only decided what I wanted to do after 3 years. I want to pursue a career in Computer Science. I know its a hard question but is there any way possible I can switch majors after transfer? I have not even completed calculus, only statistics. That's why I can't apply under a Computer Science major. Please don't judge me, I had a hard time thinking and picking what major I truly wanted and I really want computer science. My current GPA is 3.4 and I'm applying for UCI, UCSB CSULB CSUF Cal Poly. Thanks.

My initial reaction is probably not, though I’m not too familiar with those schools. CS is impacted at a lot of schools, some of them might have rules against changing into the major as a transfer (google school name + change major to CS), you’ll have to check individually to see which schools allow it and what they require.

You should also think about your overall plan. CS typically has a lot of pre-reqs, which usually includes a bunch of series like math, physics, and CS. If you haven’t started on those series yet, it might make sense to spend another year at CC to finish (or start) those pre-reqs. Otherwise you might end up spending an extra year or two at UC paying super expensive tuition for it. Try mapping it out in the number of semesters you’re planning to do after transfer. Look up the school’s GE and major requirements, can you fit everything in, while still keeping sequences in order and not getting insane workloads? How many requirements would you have to take to complete the major? What’s the longest chain of pre-reqs you’ll have to take?

Oh, and if you haven’t already, take a CS class ASAP. Some people love it, some people hate it. But it’s a good idea to figure out whether or not you really enjoy it before you go through the process of changing your major. If you don’t have any CS experience yet, the first class in the CS sequence should give you an idea of what to expect.

If you have not taken any of the prerequisites for the CS major (see http://www.assist.org ), then it is likely better to stay at CC for another year to complete them before transfer.

Changing major after transfer could be difficult, since the CS major may be impacted. Also, the UCs and CSUs do not want you hanging around for an excessive amount of time (more than four semesters or six quarters after transfer), which you would likely need if you have no prerequisites done. Extra semesters or quarters at a UC or CSU are also more expensive than extra semesters or quarters at a CC.
