Hi everyone,
I transferred to Fordham’s Rose Hill campus in fall 2016. I attend the Gabelli School of Business. Ask me any questions you have about the school, town, off-campus housing, etc. I will be honest!

If you don’t mind me asking, how were your grades in community college? I replied with this earlier.
What is social scene like?
How are the professors?
Do you learn a lot of real-life applicable knowledge?
Will it be easy to get internships?
Thanks!

Yes, you definitely learn real world knowledge. As a Jesuit school, the university really tries to emphasize both the teaching of general knowledge but also seeks to empower students to succeed with the attainment of a creative mindset. What major will you be?
The professors are generally good. This semester, one of my professors also teaches at Yale and is a CEO of a large nonprofit. Another professor used to train 80,000 people as a business executive. Yet another went to Columbia. Most professors seem to really care about the students and will make themselves available if you have questions.
I live off campus/ in the library basically, so I don’t really feel totally confident answering this question. Fordham students do party. Go out to any of the bars in the area, and you will see tons of Fordham students. I think it is pretty easy to make friends and connections regardless of who you are. There is even a Jewish club on campus!
I should warn you that many of the students here come from a lot of money, so you might see some attitudes that you don’t agree with if you come from more humble roots. But of course, this is no reason to shy away from the school.
My favorite things about Fordham: 1) It is located 20 minutes from the heart of Manhattan. I cannot even begin to convey how immensely incredible this is. Want to see the Met one afternoon? Cool, go! Want to see a $35 Broadway? Cool, go! Want to tour Wall Street? Cool, go! Want to have lunch in Central Park and be back for your 4:00 class? Cool, go! 3) Campus: it is so pretty! 4) The fact that the school accepts me as an atheist.
My least favorite things about Fordham: 1) The area surrounding the campus. I really tried to integrate into the community, but it is so dirty and feels unsafe to me. 2) The fact that the school is private. If they don’t want you on campus, you will not be allowed. If they don’t believe in a club, it will be banned. If they don’t like condoms, they will not be available anywhere on campus. You get the point.
Safety - the statistics are very high for muggings. Is there a pattern (late night, drunk, partying, alone, etc.) that you could manage to avoid significant safety risks?
Background - D is choosing between Fordham, Pitt and Maryland for Art History. Fordham is certainly a strong draw because of the location, but as a parent, I’m concerned about her safety. She’s traveled some, but we come from a small (70K) town in the south, so this would be quite a leap. (Not that Pitt and Maryland wouldn’t be as well!)
@1art1science I think that most of the muggings occur late at night, with students severely intoxicated and flashing their valuables. Each time any sort of incident occurs, Public Safety sends out extra patrols and releases a report of what happened. The last report they send out was in October, so it is not like there are muggings each day. Fordham knows that part of its reputation comes from keeping students safe, so they have 24/7 365 patrols and work with the NYPD.
The campus is 100% secure and safe 24/7. Period.
Is your D a transfer? If yes, then she will likely be offered off-campus Fordham housing. These housing units are a few blocks from campus and have security guards out front at night. Additionally, after 9 PM or 10, a shuttle service is available to get from the house to the campus and back. Finally, Fordham sends Public Safety officers to patrol the area, which is nice.
In my specific off-campus building, there are roughly 40 students, half of whom are female. Many students choose to walk down the well-lighted, popular Author Avenue on their way home.
I also came from a small town in Washington state with 85,000. The adjustment has been very easy actually. You just take it one step at a time. I think that NYC is great for an art student.
Please ask me any other questions if you have them!
Thanks. She’ll be a Freshman in the fall. Fordham has been very generous with merit $ (NMS). We’ll be visiting in late March for the first time. So she’ll have to decide pretty quickly after that.
@1art1science She will offered on-campus housing for all four years. There will be absolutely nothing to worry about if she decides to come. She will get a feel for the neighborhood outside of Fordham at her own pace.
Make sure you both take the Metro North train to Grand Central in Midtown Manhattan. The station is about 15 steps from Fordham, and you will be there in 17 minutes. This is personally what cemented my decision to come to Fordham out of 30 schools!
How much did you earn in scholarship as a transfer? I am trying to transfer in from Saint Johns University and I am concerned about this.
@daniellelsa, I earned three scholarships/grants from Fordham (no need to pay back), which reduces my tuition by nearly 50%. I also receive a federal $2000 loan each semester. The financial aid office is fantastic. One of the employees sat down with my family and I and helped us figure out different ways to afford college. This is a major contrast to another school I toured, where the financial aid officer said, “Well, you will need to find a way to secure about just $50,000 a year! Aren’t you excited about the $2,000 we will give you!” In other words, if you get accepted, Fordham really does value you and want you to have the opportunity to be a Fordham scholar.
Being truthful, I was just speaking to another transfer who received no aid at all and said that transfers often don’t get scholarships. Well, I did, so I’m not so sure how valid his statement his. But this is just a heads up.
Let me know if you have any other questions about anything! Love helping out!
Thanks so much! I’m applying as a commuter and the only way I can go is if I get accepted for tuition exchange or receive enough scholarship money so that I’m paying around what I’m paying now for SJU. My friends who entered as freshman got about as much as I would need, but as a transfer I’m not expecting it to be that easy! Whatever happens I definitely want to go to the financial aid office and request more.
Edit: Also, how did you go about talking to financial aid? Did you have to make an appointment? Did they give you more money in scholarships when you talked to them?
Commuting will be a good way to go!
When I toured the school with my family, we just stopped into the financial aid office. If I were you, I would email a few days before you tour (or re-tour) the campus, just to make sure that the office is open for walk-in sessions. During the meeting, they didn’t offer any more funding; however, they were definitely willing to walk us through other options, like what sort of loans would be available. My family was satisfied with the amount we had been offered, but I think if it had been less, we may have had a chance at asking for more funding.
One other thing, if you are anything like me, you have a lot on your mind regarding this whole transfer process. As someone who recently transferred, just know that everything is going to work itself out, and you are going to do great in your last few years of university!
@daniellelsa Also, I noticed that you were previously asking about tuition exchange. If you go to the financial aid office prior to them accepting you/giving you a scholarship letter, you can ask about this. I’m not 100% certain, but I think that the advisers probably have a way to type short notes to the people deciding the award amounts. If you express a unique interest in Fordham, then of course they will want to make it so you are able to actually attend the school.
Thank you so much! I’ve been so stressed about this process, haha! I really hope that I’m able to go next year.
@atp1234 have you met anyone/know if you can transfer sometime freshman or sophomore year into gabelli from fordham college? im between business and communications right now and im wondering if this is even an option! (im enrolled as communications in fordham college at rose hill rn)
@jjohnross I won’t tell my source within the school, but people within Gabelli certainly seem interested in welcoming internal transfer students from FCRH. Gabelli has a transfer dean. You could reach out to him to see if he has any advice. If you like communications, you might like marketing. It looks like you could even minor in communications if you wanted. Additionally, you might be able to minor in a field in business, like marketing, but don’t quote me on this.
Just know that everything is going to work out, regardless of which school you are at. Fordham is great because it provides a well-rounded education. I’m assuming that you are a freshman. If so, I’m pretty confident that a lot of students change their major in freshmen and sophomore year, or alternatively, don’t know which major they are even interested in.
@jjohnross My daughter has a friend who entered as an English Major and switched to Gabelli in sophomore year. Though he loved writing, he saw that the Gabelli kids graduated with jobs. So he switched over. I believe he’s doing marketing.
I am going to be a student at FCRH next year but I also am seriously considering transferring to gabelli so that I can major in marketing. If I were to do this, could I do it before the fall semester, or would I have to wait and take Fordham College courses until the spring semester and transfer then.
Also, if I decided to spend my first semester at FCRH and then decide if I wanted to transfer to gabelli, are there certain classes that I should take while at FC that might cover some of my gabelli requirements so that I wouldn’t be too behind?
hi! i sent my application in a couple of weeks ago to transfer for the fall. i was previously accepted to Fordham but had to go to my early decision school. I took this (spring)semester off to figure out transferring but did very well at my competitive 4 year college. do you think my time off will affect my decision?
@lilaba I’m not exactly sure about the feasibility of transferring prior to starting; however, I would advise reaching out to the Office of Admissions as soon as possible to ask about this.
Regarding taking classes at FCRH that would help you excel at Gabelli, most Gabelli students only take one or two business classes their first semester. I believe that these classes are the “ground floor” which teaches the most basic business concepts and micro or macro economics. My point is, even if you don’t take a single business class your first semester, you should be fine. Most Gabelli in freshmen year are taking classes at FCRH like “faith and critical reasoning” and “composition.”
Check out this: https://www.fordham.edu/homepage/1123/internal_transfer_for_fordham_students. It looks like a fairly simple process.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. I think that if you go the marketing route, you will be very happy. Gabelli is fantastic!
