Transfer Student to SUNY New Paltz?

Hi I’m currently a freshman at SUNY Oneonta and I’m just not that happy with my decision to go here. I’m a adolescent (secondary) education major with a concentration in social studies. I want to go to another SUNY, because of cost mostly, and was considering New Paltz. What should I know about New Paltz as a transfer and if it will be the right fit for me? Also, I’m open to any other considerations of SUNYs that are good for my major. I have a 3.6 gpa and am willing to go wherever I’m accepted and will enjoy. Thanks!

Would New Paltz be less expensive than Oneonta? New Paltz is good for education. The college and town are fairly “granoly”/hipster.

My S’s best friend was very happy at SUNY New Paltz for elementary education. I can’t speak to the transferring in aspect.

Thank you! And I don’t think the cost is very different than Oneonta, I’d consider all other SUNY’s because my credits can transfer and they’re all relatively similar in price

If you’re concerned about costs, you may want to consider commuting if there’s a SUNY branch near you. Or complete your 2nd year at a cc then transfer. NYS cc’s cost ~$5k/year, commuting to a 4-year SUNY is ~$8k, and dorming at a SUNY costs ~$20k for state residents. How much can your parents afford?

Going to a state school isn’t a problem for me, I do receive financial aid. I just can’t afford a private school

New Paltz gets more apps than any other SUNY, so check their Common Data Set to see what their transfer acceptance rate is. Make sure you apply to at least a couple campuses so you have a backup.

SUNY New Paltz is a medium sized school in a pretty little town. SUNY Albany is much larger and in an urban setting. What sort of fit are you looking for?
