Transfer Student UC BERKELEY

What else would I need to get into UC Berkeley with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.5? I mean would the fact that I'm the V.P. of Marketing at a multi-million dollar corporation at the age of 21 be enough? If not, what else would I need?

you prolly need more than 3.50 IMO...depending on major 3.70+

UCB generally will only take applicants with low GPA's for a very unimpacted major. Even then it's tough to get in. The fact that you have amazing job experience usually isn't enough.

The major is South Asian Studies. I think it's unimpacted.

well it's Cal...so there even unimpacted is hard to get in than impacted at some UCs

i think university like Cal cares more about your academic ability and performance, you need to do something about your GPA.

Are you from TAS by any chance, Machiavelli?

have a sob story, i suppose. fortunately, i was not born with a sister or brother with a mental illness or disfiguration. my parents live modestly but make too much to qualify for fafsa lol. i wouldnt say were even in the upper middle class.

i'm a transfer student and i went to a very very bad high school. from my class, only one student got into ucla (about a 3.3-3.4 gpa) and one student got into berkeley (about a 4.3-4.5 gpa). the student who got into ucla, THAT one student had a sob story including homelessness and he is also african-american. he was a clever and witty boy, but not necessarily the most qualified. there were students in my high school w/ better gpas and definitely better sat scores.. but that's how the world works. from my high school a couple got into UCI and UCSD, but i'd say no more than 6. i guess in a school with about 350 senior graduates, how sad is it that only 1 student got into cal, only 1 student got into ucla, and only 3 got into ucsd and uci. the student who got into ucla decided to go to ucsb to party.

right now i am attending a california community college.. i have friends from last year who have gotten into ucla w/ gpas between 3.5-3.9. another good friend got admittance to usc w/ a 3.9 gpa as a business major. they had extracurriculars on their side, and they were between the ages of 23-25.

keep up your gpa, in fact try to increase it! show them how you have overcome adversities, and what you will bring to their university. i think you have to be credible and say "i have done this, i have learned that, and i will bring this" -- i've noticed many a times that people write theory-ish and say how UCs will benefit them and what they think they'll bring to their campus. my approach was to show "this is what i've done.."

but yeah a sob story wouldnt hurt infused with what youve accomplished should help. but of course, gpa is certainly a key factor.

"I mean would the fact that I'm the V.P. of Marketing at a multi-million dollar corporation at the age of 21 be enough?"

Thankfully, no.

Haha, I was waiting for something like that.

Out of curiosity, how are you guys going to react if you get an acceptance notice next week?

do you really think telling the admissions about having a 'disfigured/mentally ill' sibling would help your cause?

you would probably have to have some amazing story....wouldn't you?

are you seriously kidding me? Of course telling them my little sister, Mary-Joe has down syndrome ISNT going to get me accepted to a top tier UC, but I have noticed that people who have had difficult circimstances in life (i.e. homelessness, raising your little sister who has down syndrome, etc) gives you a different capacity to think. they tend to be more altruistic and think beyond what will happen to them. aka theyre unselfish.

i'm sure the UCs would love to see forward-lookers and thinkers because they are the ones who end up shapig history.

i can ask a UCLA admissions officer how they factor in a person's ability to manage a multimillion dollar company and an education.. because i have connections to one, but for Berkeley, eh i have no connections there. I WOULD LIKE TO THINK that they would respect someone's ability to do both.

The last thing I want for anyone, and Machiavelli is to go in the application process thinking he has a snowball's chance in hell at Berkeley because some CC-ers told him that. There are people who defy the statistics all the time. Be one of them. I CAN TELL YOU RIGHT NOW, i know of 2 people personally who have gotten into both Cal and UCLA w/ 3.3 and 3.0s respectively. I know a person who has transferred to the Haas school of business from a Junior College with mediocre scores.

Stay optimistic Machiavelli, because it's not over til it's over. OKAY? Also, TITLES dont mean jack, for all we know that could be nepotism working in your favor... it's what you've done with the title. Your GPA, if it is somewhere near 3.5, isnt too shabby, considering you work full-time.

Start some humanitarian projects if youre company has the means.. get involved with the community, and be a pioneer. MILLIONS CAN DO A LOT.

Best regards to you and your endeavors, and stay optimistic.

XOXO

Oh, my application essay to UCLA was about how i started my own tech company at 19, knowing nothing about tech...got in as out of state.
