Transfer Student With Academic/Fin aid Questions

Top Liberal Arts College. I've heard that before.

My current university is Benedictine University in Lisle, IL and I'm a freshman. US News rated it one of the top Liberal Arts colleges in the Midwest. So I went but I found that academics, i.e. a good education, isn't a priority among students. I don't find many people generally interested in learning with whatever class they have. This includes a limited class participation and a general less academic attitude. Benedictine is a Medical School feeder and thus that seems to be the real focus of a lot of kids. I am really turned off but have since found Kenyon.

It looks good, and sounds good, but I really want to know if the kids there share an academic interest in their studies, enjoy academic discussion and debate. I had wanted to attend the University of Chicago because of their "Life of the Mind" attitude, but found them too pricey. Kenyon is not much better tuition-wise, but it feels like it would be a nice fit academically and environmentally (quiet town in the hills, what's better?). Kenyon is supposed to be big on science too, which is good for me.

Fin Aid:
I did well my first semester of college (4.0) and I hope to do the same this semester. Would it be too late to receive any of those Academic Merit Scholarships awarded to students if I apply for the Fall semester?

Thanks,

-FS

Hi FS,

I have absolutely no idea about financial aid deadlines, etc. Kenyon gives really good merit aid, but to answer your more specific question, I think a call to the financial aid office would be best. Our FASFA and other financial aid documents are due in April, so I think you'd be able to get merit aid for the fall, but I'm not sure.

As for the other stuff, I totally believe that (most) Kenyon students are completely dedicated to academics. Sure, we like to have fun, but at a place like Kenyon, it is hard to slack off. Many, many Kenyon classes are discussion based, and I've participated in many out of class academic discussions.

Science is excellent at Kenyon, and nearly all premeds who apply to medical school get in no problem.

Let me know if you have more questions or want more details on anything!

Application deadlines for Regular Decision were Dec 15 for merit based scholarship and Jan 15 for normal application (with the possibility of need based aid). Again, I am sorry but I have no idea if this applies for transfer students. It will be best, as kclady said, to call admissions and ask them. They are usually very accomodating and encouraging so you might still be in luck.
Good Luck.
