I am currently at a community college hoping to finish with a 3.7-3.8 cumulative GPA next year and hoping to be accepted into UCB under a rhetoric major. I was wondering what my chances are of getting in? For those of you who have transferred, I was also wondering what the transfer dorms are like. I just want to gain some sort of insight on what the campus is like and if anyone has any pointers on writing the essay to get in I would appreciate it. I hope to tour the campus soon.

My GPA was actually near the mid 3.6 range when I got accepted for this Spring 2011 term. I’m also a community college transfer student who applied in with an English major. My essay I just told the truth, I picked something I was passionate about and related it to real world experiences. You want it to show something unique about you that you can bring to the table at Berkeley without being boring. Both essays though were to the word exactly the number required, so try to manage a balance in length on both of them. Most campuses have people who help with application essays, I got an English professor (head of the English dept here) I’m in good terms with to help me with mine. Write out a draft for each copy, ask them to peer edit it and let them know its for your college app, most professors would be delighted to help you get into Berkeley.

When I was applying I was told 3.6-3.8 is a competetive GPA, I’d say that helps your chances of getting in. Others here probably know more though, as far beyond that I can’t help as much. Good luck :)
