Transfer Students Winter 2010

I’m a sophomore transferring to BU from Brandeis starting Jan 2010.
What dorms do sophomores tend to live in? (Other than Student Village 2, which is not on the Housing Contract).
I’m a premed Bio major - how heavy is the workload at BU for that track?
I heard something about grade deflation at BU, can anyone comment on that?
For other transfers, when do we get our course/credit evaluations?

Brandeis to BU, why??? Well anyway I will be applying here for the fall as a transfer student, premed as well. Pre med will be tough anywhere you go, but i’ve heard its pretty tough at BU. Good news is that most medical schools are aware of BU’s grade deflation, from what i’ve read online…

I will also be applying for a transfer to BU along with a couple of other schools at the end of my first semester of sophomore year. I am currently a freshman and will be starting my second semester.

My questions are:

-Does it/Did it make a difference applying after 3 semesters or college or 2 or 4? Also does a Fall transfer benefit rather than a spring (one is easier accepted than another)?

-Also MATransfer…if you do not mind…would you mind saying how you did at Brandies during your 3 semesters there so I can get an idea how much they are looking for? I saw the common data on the website and they say 3.5+ GPA etc.

Thanks

Brandeis to BU for about a million reasons but the top few:
-Brandeis was hit extremely hard by the economic crisis, as were its donors who were heavily invested with Madoff. Brandeis is such a young school that it really depended on its donors and without any incoming money there won’t be any new construction projects to fix up the extremely outdated buildings.
-Too many requirements. I spent 3 semesters there talking only requirements and not a single class I was actually interested in.
-Student body. If you want a school where the student body is so stressed out and anxious all the time because of the ridiculous workload and can’t seem to act like normal humans, go to Brandeis.
-Things there just won’t be getting better. The administration can’t seem to figure out how to handle the economic crisis, classes are getting bigger, overcrowding in dorms is getting worse, the facilities are getting more and more outdated.
-Either you are a strictly observant Jew, or you smoke a **** ton of weed. And even some strictly observant Jews are potheads. Weed is everywhere at Brandeis, if you don’t smoke good luck having fun. I don’t want to be cliche and say “there are parties if you want them and know where to find them” and that’s true about Brandeis, but a Brandeis party means 500 sweaty kids and warm beer in a 95 degree basement where nobody can even move because it’s so crowded. Parties always end before midnight, either there will be no more beer left or the cops will bust it.

Surprisingly I did pretty well at Brandeis, I just wasn’t happy there and for $53,000 a year I should love my school. I had a 3.62 and two semesters on Dean’s List at the end of Freshman year. Not sure if this was taken into consideration but over the summer I had an internship at a biotech company in Boston. I knew I was transferring in October so around then I pretty much mentally checked out of Brandeis but ended up with A’s in Organic Chem and Bio labs and B+ in Orgo and a B- in Bio so my overall GPA was a 3.45.

From what I’ve heard (don’t take me as a credible source though) colleges seem to want a full year of your first school before you try to transfer. But after that I really have no idea if it matters if you transfer after 3 or 4 semesters. Be careful of what I did though, I really stopped caring and basically got senioritis all over again once I decided to leave Brandeis.

Swamanator, you may want to apply to schools at the end of freshman year just in case first semester sophomore year is a little rough and you end up not being as strong of a candidate as you expected yourself to be. I started this year with absolutely no intention of transferring so I didn’t really look into which semester was easier.

Hope this helps, good luck on your applications!
