Transfer Students

I have a couple of questions regarding transferring into Michigan’s Musical Theatre program.

-Are transfer students considered alongside of the freshman candidates or are they in a separate category?
-Does the school have to take a specific number of transfer students?
-What do they expect of their transfer applicants?
-Are they notified of their acceptance/rejection later than other applicants?

Thank you!

I auditioned this November as a transfer student, so I should have some useful information for you.

-The category of transfer applicants depends on the background of the applicant. For example, if you're a sophomore at another MT program applying to transfer, you will be thought of as someone prepared to enter U of M's program the following year as a junior. Therefore, you must have ballet, acting, voice, music theory, etc. coursework equivalent to two years of collegiate study. I, on the other hand, am actually a freshman in U of M's LSA, so I applied as a cross-campus transfer with no previous collegiate musical theatre coursework; therefore, I was placed in the same category as the freshmen candidates, as I would begin, if accepted, with the freshman coursework.
-As far as I know, there is no quota of transfer students, though I will tell you that they do not accept many. Generally, though, they are more likely to accept a transfer from another MT program than they are to accept a transfer looking to enter as a freshman.
-Even if you are auditioning to enter as a freshman, they expect a very strong audition. I heard this from assistant dean Laura Strozeski because I had the same question when I applied. So, in this sense, it seems that they are somewhat biased against transfers.
-I don't know if notification is any different, but I can tell you that as a transfer applying to enter as a freshman, I was rejected very early. As you may know, Michigan has a system where they notify you in about four weeks whether you are accepted, rejected, or deferred until spring, and I got rejected in that letter. However, I should note that I did not give a particularly good audition. I think that, in general, U of M can tell pretty early whether they want you or not, especially if you're a transfer.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

hey, you said you were a cross-campus transfer in the music school at michigan. i was considering doing a double major in voice and something else but i'm in lsa now. what do you all need to do for a cross-campus audition?

Thanks so much for this information! I'm currently looking to transfer into a school with a Musical Theatre major, being a Theatre Performance major at another college. It's definitely scary for me just thinking about it, and this information definitely helps, because this was one of the schools I was looking at.
Thank you; it really helps to hear from someone who has actual experience with what you're going through.

do you know what it is like to audition to transfer if you have already auditioned at Michigan previously? do they frown on people like that? do they expect more from candidates who are re-auditioning? i'm a little concerned to look desperate or to have them get annoyed at me trying to audition a second time. i'm currently an MT at a fairly reputable school but possibly looking for something more.

I'm applying to UMich this year as a transfer and I'm wondering if it matters to them that I have taken a year off of school to transfer because I didn't see a point in taking classes that may or may not transfer. I was previously in a small Musical Theatre program in West Palm Beach, FL, that I knew was just not preparing me the way it should be and I was not getting many of the classes and training that I needed. Do you think that would be a problem to them? Because it previous posts people referred to them expecting you to have equivalent training in all aspects of MT. What if you have had training, but that is your reason for transferring, I mean, isn't that most people's reasons for transferring, not getting the right training that they feel that they need? I'm just getting nervous because this is one of my top choices. Do they let transfers come in as "Freshman with college credit" because I have many general ed courses done, but only about 5 theatre courses and 1 is technical and then some voice lesson and dance credits. Well, everyone on here seems to be giving great advice and seems super educated on all of this, so I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

any more opinions?

mikefriday16 - I wouldn't worry about anyone frowning upon you auditioning a second time at UM - if anything, I think it shows your interest in the program.

Bird7887 - I know of at least one student who was accepted as a freshman MT with some college credit (maybe not as much as you have) and others who have transferred in as sophomores after a full freshman year at another program (but they then take their MT classes with the first year students). For each of the past two years they have only accepted one sophomore transfer student.

Historically U of M has accepted one transfer - at least for the past 5 years that has been the case.

has Michigan ever taken in transfers for junior year? what if the candidate was coming from another BFA program?

Does anyone have any more recent info on cross-campus transfers into Michigan’s musical theatre program or transfers in general? I’m wondering if anything has changed! Thanks!

Anybody know how difficult it is to get into the MT program if you’re already in the Voice Performance program at UM?
