This question refers to transfering colleges. I applied to the University of Virginia for 08-09 but was declined. I was told that if I was an in-state then I would have been accepted. Now, I am attending Penn State University. I plan on reapplying to UVa as a transfer student. Aside from course grades, what does a college look for in a transfer student? Is there anything in particular that could help or hurt a transfer student's possibilities? Are SAT's still needed even though I am in college?

Honestly, the biggest problem for you is that unless you are a stellar student and every college in the county wants you (little bit of exaggeration) it will be tough to get in. Get really good recommendations, try and get some work and experience, and build yourself a good case of why they should let you know other than you grades. Get a teacher who will write about just your GPA, get a teacher who will write a recommendation on your class performance, different things from each recom. Like I said build your case. Also I know many people who have gone to Penn State and have done more than just fine. If you were getting in state tuition I would stay there, get some internships ever summer usually, in the field you are studying, and you should turn out better than good for the most part. Hope that helps.

Teacher recs aren’t a huge part of the transfer review process. Most students don’t send them. Your academic work at college and high school (when there is only one year of college work) will be our primary focus.

Keep in mind as you pick classes that the ideal transfer has many of the general requirements completed prior to arriving at UVa, so look at the transfer website’s list if courses recommended for each school to help you pick your classes for the next semester.

Dean J,
Despite those general education requirements what would you say to a person who was trying to transfer after one year. Also what if someone wanted to follow the Economics program and then decided to possibly minor in Finance. Could that be done? Thanks.

If you transfer after one year, you will probably be applying to UVA in your second semester. You’ll only have 1 semester’s grades to prove to UVA that you’re a responsible, intelligent, hard-working student. They will definitely look at your high school transcripts, SAT scores, and teacher recommendations more than if you transfer after 2 years. I’m not even sure if I had to send in my SAT scores and high school transcripts when I transferred after 2 years since I had over 60 college credits.

I, too, am OOS, but I already attended a Virginia state school before applying to UVA. So maybe that helped me out a bit. Also, after 4 semesters at my other school, I got into UVA with a GPA of around 3.75. I had one great teacher recommendation and one average one.
