Transfer students

Thank you, Augusta!

Another question:

As you stated in your previous answer, you experienced a bit of shock when you got to Swarthmore. How did you manage to keep your cool and do well at Swat? Was it difficult to accustom to a more difficult workload?

Another transfer applicant here!

I’ve got somewhat unusual situation. I went to Simon’s Rock, an early college in western Mass, for my AA. It’s a tiny hippy school, and I’m looking for the same tight community and intense academics with a more politically active student body. I got a scholarship for the first two years, but now that’s gone and their financial aid is terrible, and I need to move on…

From what I’ve read and heard about it, I’m absolutely hooked on Swarthmore. I’m most concerned about the social experience of being a transfer, which may be complicated by the fact that I’m the age of a freshman. Do transfers tend to stick together, and how integrated are they into the student body as a whole?

By the way - thanks, Transfer Student, for the info and your blog. It’s really confirmed my desire to be a Swattie.

Good luck to you other applicants! Looks like I’m in good company.

Hey Asael and Clara,
So Asael, I’m not sure what you qualify as “doing well” at Swat. I don’t get straight A’s, not by any means. I work moderately hard, I keep my head above water, and I make time to spend with my friends who I’m closest with. If you get in, you’re going to be able to graduate. Swarthmore is very adamant that they don’t make admission mistakes, you just have to have enough confidence in your abilities to believe it.
Clara, I don’t think anyone will notice/care about your age. I tend to hang out with mostly transfers, but I also have freshmen friends who are very close, and friends from the activities in which I’m involved. It all depends on you, who you fall in with, what you enjoy doing. I don’t know anyone who really feels alone or isolated here, so if you come here, you will definitely be in good company.

Good to hear. And apparently there will be a whole lot more of us…
One other quick question: how do transfers fare in the housing lottery? Do they have a shot at nicer upperclassmen dorms?
Thanks again!

Clara, the first year that transfers enter Swarthmore they are assigned housing by the Housing Office. For students entering as sophomores, this means a double; for juniors, a single. Thereafter I think that transfer lottery numbers are assigned randomly, within the range of numbers for your class–so you won’t do, on average, any better or worse than any other student in your class year. Housing situations for transfer students I know (few) have been middling-to-good.

Thanks for the info!

The anticipation is killing me!

I’m confused as to when we transfers are notified about our decisions. On a previous thread posted here on CC, it was said that the official notification date was on May 30th, but prospective transfers were notified on or before May 15th. As of now on Swarthmore’s website, the notification date is still May 30th. So will we be notified on or before May 15th or is the official date, as stated on the website, still May 30th?

Thanks in advance! :)

Ha, amendez, I emailed Swat with the exact same question about this time last year. They responded that I would not be hearing back until the 30th of May, but I received my acceptance on May 15, and I think every other transfer received it around that time too. I THINK (but am not positive) that the 2007 transfers heard back around May 15 as well. So, you’ll probably hear back around the 15th, although they may take longer than expected to decide or whatever.

lol sorry swattransfer. I should have made it clear that I was referring to your thread that you had made last year. I guess you were under a different user name.

Thank you for that, swattransfer! Now I know that we will be notified in a little over 3 weeks. How nerve wracking!

Kind of off topic post:

Where did you all apply to besides Swarthmore?

I guess I will start off with my list :)

Applied to: Swarthmore, Columbia University, University of Rochester, Marymount Manhattan College, and Wesleyan University. But to be honest, if I do not get admitted to Swarthmore this year, I will try again next year :)

Besides Swarthmore, I applied to U Chicago, Georgetown, and Bard. All very different schools.
There are things I really love about all of them, but Swarthmore’s by far my top choice.

Your list looks good! Swarthmore is also my top choice for sure. I just really hope we all do get in! :)

claralucia, I found your experience very interesting. If you don’t mind me asking, why did you go to an early college? I would have loved to do something like that, but was never introduced to that idea.

amendez,

Yeah, Simon’s Rock is really a unique place. Basically, I went because it’s near where I live and I managed to get a scholarship. I also felt pretty done with high school after my junior year, and I was ready to begin more in-depth college classes. It ended up being a really formative place for me.
It’s too bad that early college is such an uncommon thing, because a lot of kids really benefit from it and are ready for college work in their mid teens. Anyway, I’ve had a good, rigorous education so far, but the fact is my school can be stifling at times and is filled mostly with sixteen year olds. Also, I’m an Arabic student and the Arabic program is virtually non-existent.
Swarthmore seems like the perfect transition - small, intense, has the things I want to study, among other things. What is it, three weeks till we find out if we got in? I don’t think I can wait that long…

That sounds so cool! It seems like you really benefited from the whole experience. It just makes you stand out more for Swarthmore, making you a more unique applicant! :)

If the notification deadline is indeed May 15th (which seems to be the pattern, as stated by swattransfer), then we will hear back from Swat in the next 20 days or so. I know, I can’t wait this long either!

I’m dying lol. I just want to know :(.

Hey Clara, I met a prospective transfer today, also from Simon’s Rock. Matthew Christian? You probably know him, seeing as it’s so small! :)

Oh and also, one of the junior transfers last year was from Simon’s Rock.

Ha, of course I know him! Since I can’t make it down myself before school ends, I’m going to make him tell me all about it…
I know someone transferred last year, but can’t recall who it was… what’s his/her name?

Anthony Stigliani I believe?

anyone know if we should have our final grades sent to swat??
