Is anyone else in the process of transferring? Where to/from?

Has anyone transferred from a liberal arts school with no background in visual arts to an art school?

I guess I'm just wondering if I'll be the only 21 year old stuck in foundation classes.
I can't draw so I'm contemplating all sorts of magic ways to do a portfolio and/or get around the drawing parts just to get me to the school and into a class where I can hopefully become better at drawing.

Any recommendations for places that don't care too much about your drawing skills? Or with more open portfolio guidelines?

I may end up staying at my school a bit longer and taking basic classes at SAIC to build a portfolio, but I honestly just want out.

Has anyone applied to art schools in other countries? Specifically, the UK and English-language programs in the EU (there's programs in Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, France . . .)?

As someone with an aversion to representational drawing, let me be the first to tell you that there is no, NO way around it. If you want to do anything art related you should get comfy with it. Maybe if you’re not so good with traditional stuff, you might want to build a portfolio that reflects your strengths in other media like photography, video, typography etc. but at some point or the other you’re going to need to be able to draw. What might be better for you is transferring into another liberal arts school with a good art program like Bard or Wesleyan since you shouldn’t come up against too many skill requirements to get into the introductory level courses.

The prospects of transferring into art school when you’ve little to no experience in art may be slim. You may not need to be an excellent draughtsman but you will have to be proficient at something.

I am applying to study art in the UK and will be studying art in Germany over the spring-summer (if i can find some money). Programs in England can be a lot more specific about the kinds of portfolio they’re looking for since you’ll be applying directly to a specific major. So if you were an amazing fashion designer but not so good at drawing this would be perfect for you.

The sad part is that I would have a strong portfolio of other media, just not drawing. I’ve had photographs sold in galleries for the past few years, as well as some published in random places. Whenever I’m in school my photography gets ignored and I don’t have time to go shooting or even get involved with shows. I also very very rarely get to develop my own film (or even touch my 35mm) or work with models, lighting, etc. This is why I want art school. =)

Drawing is just a huge pain for me. I can even paint better.
I have no aversion to taking classes in it. I would love to try to learn in a more formal environment. I’ve honestly never had that opportunity.

So, I have background, just none at all formal or that can be shown on a transcript. My school has no art classes, as it’s a tight core curriculum.

I’m a freshmen at CCA right now and about up to around 1/4 of the students in some of my classes are transfers, either from other art schools and second degree students, who originally had a degree in something like psychology. There is even a 60 year old woman from France who’s a painting major in one of my classes last semester. I don’t think age really makes a difference here.
