Transfer Suggestions?

Hi all, I just ran into this forum and I was curious if anyone could help point me in a direction or another. I'm currently at a top LAC with absolutely no grade inflation (average gpa of 2.9) and doing well academically. I really love the school, but I'm starting to worry that my interests are veering in a direction that the school can't help with.

For example, I'm a classics major currently, but I have a lot of interest in Far Eastern studies (which my school doesn't offer). I'd also love to take Japanese, but it isn't offered. I'm also very interested in Geology/Meteorology, but alas, it isn't offered.

Its a very hard position to be in so I'm playing with the idea of maybe transferring. I don't know if I would in the end, but I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions for schools that might work or be worth looking at anyway.

I'm not really tied to any geographical region. I like a small class environment and do tend to like LACs, but would be willing to broaden my search if I could find more of my subject interests in one place. Academics mean a lot to me and I crave academic rigor. Socially, I'm a non-drinker and would like a school that doesn't revolve around fraternity life (especially since my current school has no frats and I rather like it that way).

Now, for the numbers.

I'm going to be entering my second year of college

Current GPA: 3.7 (two B+'s, two A-'s, the rest A's- hard courseload including an upper division class where I was the only freshman (I got a B+)). Currently, this GPA puts me in the top 10%, maybe even close to the top 5% of the school. I also recieved a commendation for this year, if that means anything. XP

Extracurriculars: Not many right now. :/ I participated in the choir and a few theatre things but nothing too much. This coming year, however, I've been hired as a tutor in the writing help center as well as offered a research position with a professor. I'm also planning on getting more involved with theatre or trying to find a club to join. However, I am very passionate about my academics and can go on and on about what I'm currently reading/ interested in. Not that it means anything, seeing as I haven't done a lot.

As for recs, I know a lot of my professors really well. I love office hours and often haunt them when they aren't that busy. XP

High School GPA: 3.98 (one B+, all the rest A's)
SAT: 710 Verbal, 620 Math
ACT: 31 (32 English, 28 Math, 36 Reading, 27 Science)

Okay, there we go. Sorry for the long post but I really appreciate any help. I honestly have no idea where I'd have any decent sort of chance or not.

Sadness... anyone?

i would love to help u, but can u please name the college that you attend so i can give suggestions?

What colleges have you been looking at so far?

Perhaps Columbia? They have an excellent Middle Eastern and Asian Cultures department. Or Barnard, if you're a female-- small LAC environment within a larger research university that probably offers anything you could ever be interested in.

mojo- Reed.

ohcomely- Thanks for the recommendations! I am a female. I'm pretty sure I don't have the app it would take to attend Columbia... I will look into Barnard though.

Ok, now that i know what region you are in; would you be considering any out of state schools like in ATL? I had gotten accepted to Emory but i decided not to go.In the midst of the application process, i realized that they had a GREAT eastern program, esp middle eastern. So if thats your interest, perhaps you should look into it! Emory has is a relatively medium-sized school; about 13,000 and the average faculty per student ratio is somewhere like 20 students per teacher.

Also, if you have cali residency, you should apply to UCLA or UCBERK...
In addition, you can consider U michigan, NYU, Vassar (another LAC),

Columbia is a reach for anyone, but a 3.7 from Reed is really, really good. You should give it a shot if you're looking for a few reach schools to apply to.

I'd also recommend Swarthmore. It has a lot of your requirements-- a good Classics department (I'm assuming that it's good, since Bryn Mawr is one of the best in the country, and they are both in the same consortium), Japanese classes, academic intensity, etc. It would probably be another reach because of the small number they accept from their pool.

Alas, I'm not too sure about undergraduate geology departments. I'll throw in Brown solely because of their department website description: "...rated among the top programs in the nation and the world." I think it also fits a lot of your other preferences, and who wouldn't want the freedom to create their own program of study-- especially with the different academic interests you've mentioned.

avg of 2.9 is not grade inflation? that's almost an avg of a B!!!
shouldn't avg at (non top 20 national school) be somewhere around 2.0?

^^^ no way!

Mojo- Thanks for the recommendations. I'll definitely look into them! I am currently out of state where I'm at but I'm not a Cali resident.

Ohcomely- Wow, really? Well, I'll definitely look into it. I really wanted to apply to Columbia, Brown and Swathmore when I was a senior in HS. Then I went through a period where I (stupidly) decided my grades/scores weren't good enough to get me anywhere I really wanted to go. >.<

Thanks for all of the help!

Just being annoying and bumping this. XP

i don't get it, is your GPA 2.9 or 3.7???

Her gpa is 3.7. The average at her school is 2.9

Andrea is correct about my GPA. Sorry for being unclear. XP
