Transfer Thread 2006-2007!

What is ECU? I'm familiar with most of the other abbreviations. My D is going to be auditioning as a transfer student, and we're trying to compile a more focused list than she had last year. UArts is number one on her list, and we are looking for other programs, mainly in the northeast--bus or train distance if possible. Also, can anybody suggest any good state university programs in Musical theatre. We are looking for something less expensive than NYU, Marymount, etc. Any word on SUNY Buffalo or Cortland?

East Carolina University in North Carolina

Here is a link to the university website www.ecu.edu/

Good luck with the transfer process.

Singalong - KatMT may have had the explanation you wanted, but "ECU" also can refer to equivalent credit units, which may be what you're thinking of in regards to transferring. Sometimes, with conversion or quarters to semesters, etc., the credits don't always add up to the same thing.

question-do you all have "transfer counselors" at your schools? I can't find one here...it's super annoying...I think I have to use my advisor or something...

It seems to me like a transfer counselor would only be available at junior colleges... not at a 4 year institution. You may just have to go to your advisor. I'm taking some classes at a junior college near me, and I know that there are people who specialize in assisting students transfer.. since that is what you do after you've received a certain amount of credits at a JC- you transfer. To me it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for them to have that service at a 4 year institution since they most likely want you to stay there haha

yeah but I mean...people transfer all the time...shouldn't they have something?!

I think MTgeek is right. Transfer advising in 4 year schools seems to be done by the school the student wants to transfer TO, not the one they want to transfer FROM. If you know a faculty member in your major, they may offer help to potential transfers since they may know other schools' strengths and curricula?... Advisors wouldn't necessarily know much about another 4 year school outside their area of expertise....

Millikin University is pretty open to transfers! I'm a transfer sophomore this year, and things are going well! I'm willing to answer any questions people may have if anyone's interested!

Hello everyone! I used to post on here last year as Ilovethestage04, but I have a new name now, along with a new e-mail address.
I am joining all you transfers in auditioning for BFA programs this year. I went to Skidmore last year, but decided I'd be much happier in a BFA MT program. So here I am to be part of the message board as I go about this whole process! :)
I think I'm auditioning at these schools:

Syracuse
Emerson
BoCo
NYU

and possibly UArts, Hartt, Ithaca, and some others. My only problem is how EXPENSIVE it is to apply! So I'm not sure if I can afford to apply to more than 4 or 5! Well, I'm anxious to talk to some of you guys. Transferring definitely is one of the hardest things to do...already I've encountered difficulties with applying. So I wish you all the best of luck!!

~Amy~

Amy, it is so nice to see you here again. Try to look into application fee waivers at the schools to which you'd like to apply. Also look into Unified Auditions to cut down on audition trip expenses. Best to you. Isn't it gorgeous out in VT today with the peak foliage? :D

hey Amy-you know that Emerson doesn't audition for BFA transfers, right? It's sucky because I really wanted to. Oh and you can IM me anytime if you want to talk! It's nice to have people in similar situations to chat with.

hey amy!! i hope you're doing well :)

i just wanted to let you know that i've auditioned all of those schools except UArts and Emerson, so if you have any questions about the auditions themselves, definitely let me know!!

it's good to have you back :)

hey guys it's so nice to see everyone again :) thanks for all the support!

dramalady---im actually going to audition at emerson as a freshman, so maybe you could do that too! its confusing because at some schools you HAVE to audition as a freshman, and at others, you don't even have the option to audition as a freshman. apparently, if you've been to college, you are officially a transfer...kind of annoying, since i wouldn't mind starting over at some places :)

sporti---ill definitely write to ask you a few questions about each audition. you're a great help!!

soozie---yes, vermont's foliage is great, but its raining here today :( i think the peak is over now, and all the leaves seem to have been blown off in the wind!

xoxoxoxo
Amy

oh, one more thing i thought I'd add.....
my boyfriend is a senior in hs and he is also REALLY into musical theatre (he's an awesome tenor)
so he is also auditioning for bfa schools. it makes me really happy, and its definitely nice to have someone to share the experience with, you know? anyway, i just wanted to brag about my baby, so that was it. LOL

xoxoxoxoAmy

wait vt-have you been to college? blegh, i have to call them and ask what I could do

As far as I know with pretty much every BFA program, and college in general, if you have attended a post-secondary school you are considered a transfer-- even if you didn't finish and don't have ANY credits. So no matter what you will still be applying as a transfer at all of these schools. It just depends on your previous background whether, if accepted, you'll be placed in freshman level or sophomore level classes. Most programs demand that you start off at a freshman level no matter what your educational background. So I don't think you can get into the Emerson BFA at all, since they don't allow transfers into the program.

yeah I called. it's a no.

That's so strange. I could have sworn I saw on an emerson arts supplement application or somesuch thing a statement regarding transfers applying as freshman.
but i recall that was last year, and maybe things have changed.

So how are my fellow transfers doing thus far?

I finally have all my apps in, just waiting on some of the recommendations and transcripts to get to the schools. My final list changed a bit from earlier in the year:

UArts (Jan. 20th Audition)
Hartt (Feb. 4th Unified)
BoCo (Mar. 3rd Audition)
NYU (Mar. 30th Audition)
Montclair
Muhlenburg

For the most part I have my auditions spread out a lot, leaving much of February to work on anything I've had trouble with in the earlier auditions.

What's great though is that if I get accepted by any one of the schools on my list, I know I'll be happy there! Whether it's a top tier program or a new up and coming one or the BA program on my list. I'm sure I'll see some of you at the auditions next year!

I'm hoping to do the jan 20 at uarts too, although I don't have my app in yet.
