Transfer to a different program?

My D just got accepted into Harpur College (yea) but has expressed interest in Human Development. Can she major in that without transferring into another college? And would she be allowed to transfer from Harpur into the College of Community and Public Affairs which houses the Human Development major? Apparently we did not notice a place on the Common App to apply directly to a specific college or perhaps did not do enough homework to find out which college housed that major. She will be visiting later this Spring and will inquire about this issue when there but just curious if anyone has insight in this forum. Thanks.

Congrats on her acceptance. On the application, the area where you list what your intended major will be, is the determining factor as to what school they consider you for. If she put undecided then Harpur would be the automatic one. The only way your daughter can major in Human Development is by switches into CCPA. I believe that your daughter, as she was accepted to Harpur would have to stay in Harpur for at least the first semester, and then she can apply as an intra-university transfer. To get into CCPA from Harpur should honestly not be that hard to do.

Qtjan5 is correct in stating that your daughter will be required to remain in Harpur College for at least one semester. Once accepted/denied for a school, Admissions will not reconsider a student for a different one. Rest assured, this isn’t an uncommon occurrence. Good luck! :)

your d shouldn’t worry about not being in hdev to begin with – students in hdev don’t actually start taking hdev courses their freshmen year – she can concentrate on her general education requirements and some hdev required courses within harpur (eg intro psychology and intro sociology) and not lose any ground. she should realize that the hdev program is housed at the school’s downtown center – so once she would begin taking hdev courses, she’d be going there for those courses. not a big deal – a bus runs from campus to the downtown center.
i would recommend that once she is there, she make an appointment to meet with the hdev adviser (her office is in the downtown center) to make sure she fully understands the requirements of that program before she applies to transfer. it is not at all uncommon for students to transfer into hdev from harpur.

Thanks for the great advice. links and reassurance. If these responses are an indication of the support available at Binghamton, then my D would make a great choice if she chooses to enroll there. You have each been most helpful.

you may want to read the articles about SUNY Bing’s school of Human Development that have been in the papers in recent days in relation to the Basketball scandal. The program has definitely been compromised in recent years. I have friends who teach in it and they are very upset at the direction it has taken.

not exactly sure but since they are letting us make a deposit towards the Human Development program, we are assuming my daughter got in!!! She is very excited to be admitted into Binghamton but not entirely sure if she wants to do the Human Development program. If she doesn’t like it, can she transfer into Harpur aftera semester or two? Like take all the required classes the first two semesters and a couple of Human Development ones and then go into Harpur?

Again - yes she can transfer from CCPA to Harpur. As with any inter-university transfers, you Daughter would have to wait until at least her 2nd semester to apply to transfer. Generally CCPA students take most of their classes in Harpur anyway to fulfill their requirements.

Thank you so much for the info. It is really hard to tell exactly what is up with this college but maybe we will take a drive up and try to speak with someone directly.

did iamhere just try to answer a question for me? I tried clicking on something to allow it but I think I lost the connection…

thank you iamhere. i got your info. very helpful!!
