Would the IGETC program allow me to transfer into a UC with a Mechanical Engineering major? Or do I have to fulfill the classes listed under assist.org and do the HSSEAS General Education Requirements? I won't be able to two at least two or three classes from the HSSEAS requirement, so should I attempt to transfer as undecided until I fulfill the requirements?

Thanks

I would just follow the HSSEAS general education instead of the IGETC. Each UC has different GE requirement and IGETC is just a cookie cutter list. If I remember right, IGETC was mostly for CSU’s.

As for completing the classes, well the more you complete the better the chances you have of transferring. I completed most of the GE requirements and did a lot of the engineering courses that are on the assist.org list. It cut down my course load after I transferred. I knew tons of people who transferred into UCLA without completing all the GE requirements and no engineering classes. All they completed were the lower division requirements, such as chem, all the math classes, and physics. On the other hand, they had to take more classes than me.

assist.org will tell you for a given UC or CSU and major whether IGETC is recommended. It does not hurt to complete IGETC even if not needed, unless taking the courses needed for IGETC crowds out more important courses in your schedule.

For example, UC Berkeley’s College of Letters and Science accepts IGETC for breadth requirements, but UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering does not, although transferable humanities and social studies courses taken at community colleges can be used for some of the breadth requirements (transfer students would need to complete the rest after transferring).

Which UC were you looking at?
