transfer to a UC

so i attended ucsc in the fall of 2017 and finished my freshman year, but because of family and financial issues, i took a leave of absence and am taking classes at my community college this fall 2018.

my question is this, I am thinking of applying as a transfer student to UCLA for the fall of 2019 (i have the credits) but will my gpa from UCSC and my gpa from CC merge? will they look at them separately? how will my change from a 4 year university to CC be looked at by the admissions office? will I be applying as a CC student or a UC transfer? Thank you

you are transfering from the last school you attended, in this case a CC. In order to get the CA CC preference you need 30 CC units which you ought to have. Your gpa is the sum of all the classes you have taken, i have never heard of them being considered separately. I assume you left UCSC in good standing because otherwise you can’t transfer to another UC.

Be careful of getting too many units. they cap the CC units you can transfer at 70 but then will add on all the units you took at UCSC. If you only go for 1 year to the CC you’ll be fine but if you end up attending for 2 years then it may be an issue.

See if your school is on the list of TAP schools since they get preference in admission to UCLA for some majors.

i currently have 87 UC credits under my belt and only plan on taking some classes for my major requirements at the CC to fullfill the junior level transfer lower division courses , so I dont believe I will be taking too many classes just getting rid of like 2 GE and 3 major prerequisites. will that be a problem if I take less than 30 CC credits in one year? MY school does offer TAP but i think its too late to apply for it since I am applying for Fall 2019 and the app is due pretty soon. and yes I left in a good standing.

my current UC GPA is a 3.3 so thats why i am asking to see if good grades at the CC will boost my gpa

the normal units earned at a UC on the quarter system per year is abour 45. If you have 87 and attended UCSC for only 1 year then I assume the remainder is AP credit, summer school not at a UC, or dual enrollment. The reason I mention this is ucla will consider you as a high-unit junior at 135 quarter units and at that point will not consider admission. So carefully figure out how many units the UC system will consider you to have. See http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/Transfer_Credit_Practice.pdf

You can look at the sticky at the top of this sub-forum to see the average gpa range for your major. Overall at ucla the lowest 25% percentile cutoff was 3.63 You can also figure out what your GPA would be if you got all A’s in the courses you are planning on taking to figure out how much they will raise your overall GPA

I want to backpedal a bit on what I said about what is considered your xfer school.

Since you are planning on earning less than 30 units I don’t know what they will consider your transfer school to be. Are you a UC xfer that took some classes at a CC? Are you a CC xfer that doesn’t get the CCC boost? I’m not going to guess. You should talk to UCLA admissions, or with the UC counselor that comes around to your school (they regularly visit all CC in the state, go to the xfer center to see when the next visit will be)

I have no chance huh, if I were to take 8 classes and get all As it would only boost me up to a 3.59 not to mention I got way too many stupid credits

Keep in mind they don’t count AP in those high unit counts. If adding all your one year units from the CCC and all the UC courses (not AP) if you’re at 86.5 semester units or lower you have a shot at UCLA, depending on major and how your GPA matches the mid-range. Like mikemac said without 30 units from a CCC you won’t get priority consideration but you still have a shot. But also keep other UCs on the radar.

IMy Ucsc transcript for freshman year said I had 87 UC quarter units and I’m only applying to UCLA for the proximity and my major, I would look at UCSB but my major isn’t available, and as much as I would like to attend ucla, I could always just go back to UCSC anytime, I would just have to get my financial status up

As @mikemac said, that’s extremely high. A median would be about 45 qtr. You should count out the actual course units manually, including any courses from other schools.

Ok well I guess without AP, then yea I only have 45

Well ok, you should be able to apply even if you have 30 semester from a CCC (giving you priority consideration), because that’s 60 semester, plus any AP.
