Transfer to another prep school as a junior? Please read!

Hey all, I have a dilemma.

I am currently going to a prep school. I am a junior, and am definitely not liking it there, and have had serious issues there. I am highly considering transferring to another prep school which offers everything my current school lacks. This will mean I will repeat junior, but will also mean I will graduate with a total of 6 AP credits which is my goal because I am looking at colleges abroad.

Do colleges frown upon repeats? My grades are good A-/B+ average consistently. Taking heavy course load. I just want another year of prep school, in a better environment which caters to what I need.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

You are halfway through junior year, with just three semesters to go. Why do you want to spend an extra year in high school? How does your family feel about paying for an extra year of high school?
Have you started to look at colleges yet?

Can your family afford the extra year?

Colleges don’t frown on repeats at lower grade levels if your grades are good. But at this late date, it will look odd and you aren’t likely to find a junior spot at a boarding school unless you’re a full pay - and perhaps not even then. If you need substantial or full FA you can pretty much forget it. The slots are very VERY limited for full pays and for FA probably non-existent because the funds are already allocated for the class through senior year.

If you’re a junior now - your best bet is to finish Senior year at your current school since you’ve only got another year or so, take some college courses over the summer, and find a good college you’ll enjoy.

Of course, you could always try for a spot at a different boarding school, but if you aren’t accepted, you’ll have burned a lot of bridges at your current school and your leverage for activities will be reduced quite bit.

But then again - if you’re truly that miserable, you could try and then - if you don’t get a spot just drop out and go to your local school. But my question is - the deadline for most schools is in two weeks. Would you even have time to get an application together?

My parents actually suggested this to me, so they are 100% fine with it. I definitely have a list of schools I really like. I just feel like I am not ready and want to develop my talents just a bit more before heading out into the real world.

I am not in need for FA or anything like that. I already applied to some schools so deadlines are no problem either. But if colleges see that my grades are fine, will they still think it is strange I repeated? Will this make schools less likely to offer me admission?

Thank you both!
