I'm trying to get some idea of whether this is possible:

Going to to a community college like OCC or IVC and completing 60 semester units for a EE course in 1.5 years (2 Spring, 1 Fall and 1 Summer Semester) and then transferring to Berkeley for electrical engineering. If I can be honest, I think I can handle more then average workload.

I'll be taking honors classes at IVC\OCC and am fairly confident that I can maintain a high GPA.

Will this workload be overkill?

And in case your wondering why 1.5 years, I can't go to college until Jan 2010 due to personal family problems. (Taking the the normal course load at that point would mean that I would transfer to Berkeley Fall 2012)

OCCTransfer, I would like to personally ask for you sage advice :)

its not impossible. i’ve read around this forum that some people have done it in 1 year. so it’s worth a shot. if you want it, you’ll be able to do it!

Aside from your capability, AFAIK you’re going to have a difficult time getting Spring admission. Generally that’s a second prize offered to transfers who barely make the cut. I believe you have to apply for Fall admission, and while it might be possible to defer to Spring once you’re admitted, you’ll have a very limited record to put on your application.

KGZotU, he would be applying for the fall term. He simply would be applying to transfer after a single spring and summer session. And then include his fall grades in his application update.

ee92, I see nothing unreasonable with your plan. However, I would like to point that you can start college sooner than you think! You can even do a summer session. Tons of SoCal Community Colleges offer a variety of online courses. Although you probably won’t be able to take EE pre-reqs online, you can fulfill all your general ed with these online classes. In my experience, online classes are very easy. It’s mostly just a little bit of busywork, really no reason why you couldn’t get all As.

By fulfilling almost all your general ed online, you’ll be able to devote your time at your CC to fulfilling the numerous EE pe-req courses. Furthermore, you will also have more units on your transcript at the time of your application. EE is an impacted major at Cal/UCLA, so you definitely will want all the boosts you can get.

I’d say it’s very possible. My CCC allowed people to take 19 units per semester, and 12 during summer. So 19 + 12 + 19 +19 = 69. It can be done easily. I took 19 this spring and it was one of the funnest semesters I’ve had academically. Got straight A’s too. Some CCCs don’t even have unit caps.

Don’t waste your time with honors classes. Just work on keeping a high GPA and take like 16-18 units per semester. I got into Berkeley without doing any honors.

Oh, gotcha. When he said he couldn’t go to college until Jan 2010, I thought that meant he couldn’t go to Berk till Jan 2010. I didn’t add things up. (:

I’ll double tap what Supa_Ramga said. In particular, you might look to SMC. They’ve got most GE classes online, and they even offer winter intersession courses that are just a few weeks long.

super_ramga, I’ll definitely look into those online classes, I’ve found a few programs and am beginning to research them more thoroughly (if anybody wants any info on this let me know)

Dem Bones, awesome so I won’t even need to hit maximum credit load to graduate in 1.5 years

Another thing that’s been nagging me is the possibility that I might not get the classes I need to transfer due to the shorter time that I’ll be at CC. While I’m going through their course catalog to determine whether this is actually the case, does anyone have any idea on this?

If you’re going for IGETC–if it’s recommended for your major you should definitely do it–then you can still take courses from multiple campuses. You ultimately have to get IGETC certified by the last college you attend prior to transfer, but you can use courses towards that from other colleges. If the college that you’re taking the online course from says it fulfills a particular IGETC requirement, then your home college will accept that when they certify IGETC.

I recommend looking at a single college that can fulfill most/all of your online needs–like SMC–as it’s a real pain, and maybe difficult to explain, to get many sets of transcripts together, particularly if you’re applying to grad school.

Definitely use ratemyprofessors.com and pickaprof.com if you have any section choices…those things can really help decrease your courseload so larger courseloads are more managable.

Whether or not you are going to be able to pull this off largely depends on prereqs. If a lot of the courses you are going to take have prereqs, then completing 60 units in the time frame you mentioned isn’t very feasible.

However, you can usually challenge prereqs, although most CCC’s won’t allow you to challenge math or English prerequisites.

you can do it, im applying as a transfer this year and ill have been in cc for 1.5 years. I’m majoring in business/econ which has close to the same number of prereqs. However, cal does not accept transfers for second semester.

i go to occ, most courses are pretty easy A’s if u just go to class and if you have a brain…it’s definitely possible to transfer in 1.5 yrs if u take summer and intersession. i dont know about CAL as a whole, but i know some majors like bus. admin. dont take transfers for spring.
