Transfer to Berkeley

I am wondering what my chances are for Berkeley from a local community college as a philosophy major.

I am applying with a 3.923 gpa, however i do have 3 W's and 1 W in a non transferable class. i got the other 3 W's because of scheduling issues because I had a cancelled class (due to low enrollement) and my schedule got messed up. Some counselers and addmissions representatives say it doesn't matter, but some do say the W's will be a problem. So opinions really vary. I do plan to address the issue in my personal essay. I also do have some volunteer work from 2 non profit organizations. I am also a member for 3 school clubs. I have had some employment. I am also a member of TAP (transfer alliance program) and went through the mentoring programs for Berkeley.

Please let me know if my application looks bad.

anyone have any opinions??? theres views but no posts :(

I think you have a fairly good shot depending on how the admissions people look at the W's. If you address them and have a good reason it probably wont be a big problem.

You are in.

W's aren't that big of a deal, especially if you only have a few. It's always better to know your own limits and withdraw rather than take on an extra class that you might end up getting substandard grade. The fact that you have a high GPA means that you make wise and thoughful choices when deciding to withdraw, and that you only have 3 W's in transferrable courses means that you didn't do it too often. Plus, TAP almost guarantees you admission. If you do IGETC and you're in TAP, you'll be fine, I promise.

Thank you guys for the posts! I talked to another representative from Berkeley today. She said that it didn't matter if you have a few. If you guys have any more opinions please let me know.

I did some reserch and I found that tap applicants do have over a 90% chance of getting in according to statistics.

What do you want to do with a Philosophy degree? It sounds cool, but it's going to be hard to find a job unless you plan on doing graduate school in a different subject.

Im probbly going to try to double major or at least minor in something else like enviormental economics or interdisplinary studies with the econ emphasis. I will have to make a compromise one way or another.

Thanks guys for the input. Is there anyone else with more opinions or agree with the other statements?

Yeah I agree that your in. I didnt see that you were apart of the TAP program.

what is the Transfer Alliance Program?

Its a Berkeley outreach program for underrepresented minorties. I got in because of my race.

For the one at UCLA the TAP is basically a set of rigorous courses that you need to take at your community college to join that program to increase your chances for admission.

Thanks TRANSFERJOE for the followup
