Transfer to Brown/Chances for Other Schools

Hello everybody,

I'm currently a sophomore at my local community college and I'm looking to transfer to Brown University for Fall 2013, and I will be applying to:
NYU
Boston College
Barnard
Swarthmore
Bryn Mawr
Along with a couple "safety schools."

I'm intending on double majoring in Art History and French.

For my senior year of high school, I was part of a program where I studied at the CC and graduated with my senior class. I graduated 3rd in my class. My GPA at the CC was (and still is) a 4.0 by the time I graduated, but I'm not sure how that integrated into my high school GPA since they changed the scale from a 5.5 my junior year to a 4.0 my senior year. By the end of my junior year, I had a 5.4 GPA.

I have not yet taken the SAT's but will be taking them three times over the course of next semester and estimating that I'll have between a 2100-2300.

Here are my extracurriculars/honors:

High School:
Took the hardest classes available during Freshman/Sophomore/Junior years; one AP and three "HAT" classes which were advanced honors classes
Three Years of First Chair Flute in Honors Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Marching Band
--Received two "Excellent" medals (for a duet and a trio) and one "Superior" medal (for a solo) in Solo and Ensemble
--Ranked 19th in the state of about 200+ flute players
--40+ hours a week practicing

Varsity Field Hockey and Junior Varsity Captain

National Honors Society all four years

National Society of High School Scholars

Spanish Honors Society

State Honors Society

College:
President of the French Club (2 years)
--Most active club in the college; each semester raising $2000+ for local charities, one fundraiser coordinating with a charity that raises money for women and children in Uganda by selling handmade jewelry
--Coordinating cultural events

Peer Tutor in French

Phi Theta Kappa
--Will be participating in a 3.5 credit "Honors Colloquium" only available to PTK members

Honors Program
--4 honors projects (approximately 20 page papers + presentations); three in art history (my intended major) and one through the Honors Colloquium. For one of my honors project this semester, I did field work in Paris studying Manet's Olympia.

Other Extracurriculars:
Rhode Island School of Design
--Certificate in Fashion Design (for high school students)
--Currently finishing my Certificate in Apparel Design
--Will be taking either two undergraduate courses in Apparel Design for Summer 2013 or one RISD undergraduate course and one Brown undergraduate course

High School Tutor in English, Math, and Science
--Last semester, I spent about 10-15 hours a week tutoring high school students at a charter school centered around environmental science

Intern and Assistant to the Accessories Director at my local Fashion Week (which has been approved by the Council of Fashion Design of America)

Working 40+ Hours/Week for 2 years at an accounting firm as a bookkeeper and assistant to a CPA

My writing is really good, so I'm confident in my essays. Also, I'm not too worried about my letters of recommendation because both teachers have also been wonderful mentors to me over my two years at the community college.

How are my chances as a transfer student? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I forgot to mention that I will be graduating in May with an Associates in Liberal Arts with 62 credits. Providing that not all of these credits transfer, will I be able to enter into a four-year college as a sophomore/be allowed to attend the college for three years? I’m planning on studying abroad for at least a semester, if not a year, and I don’t want to shortchange my education by only attending a college for two years.

Bump…

I don’t do Chances, but since B is need aware for transfers, part of the equation is always whether or not you are applying for FA.

Yes, they will determine how long you can stay dependent on how many transfer units they accept.

Thank you, entomom! I’m applying for some FA but money is not much of an issue. I don’t know if this will hurt me or help me in the application process.

When admissions are need aware, that means that whether or not you apply for FA is a factor in decisions. See this thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/936056-brown-transfer-applicant-survey-fa-need-aware-admissions.html?highlight=need+aware

From what I gained from that thread, applying for FA can significantly lower your chances of being admitted. In that case, do they take into account how much you need (ie. are they more likely to admit someone who needs some aid, like in my case, compared to someone who is dependent on a lot of aid), or is it more so just the action of applying for it? That’s what is confusing me.

I don’t want to have to apply for FA (but really, who does?) if it’s going to be a dead weight.

Bingo.

No one knows exactly how it works. If I were to guess I’d think there’s an interaction between amount of need and the strength of the application. So, for an excellent candidate that they really like, they might be willing to give a large amount of FA, but if a candidate is OK but not great, they might only take them if they are paying full fare. It also may vary from year to year, depending on how much money there is left in the FA pot once fr admits are taken care of. These are just conjectures, logic, etc. on my part, I have no insider information.

When D1 applied for transfers we knew she would qualify for little or no FA from B (she’d applied the year before), so B is the one school she didn’t ask for FA from, she was accepted but did not attend.
