Hi, I am currently a sophomore studying Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

I am a native Rhode Islander and woud like to transfer to Brown for the fall 2007 semester. I was recently diagnosed with depression and I am wondering if this will be detrimental to my application. (Will Brown not want to admit somebody that has a history of mental health problems....?)

Also, does anyone know how competitive transfer admission to Brown is? After my first year at JHU, I have a 3.8 GPA, I am the Vice-President of a club on campus (Engineers without Borders), and have done research at the Johns Hopkins Medical School....thanks a lot!

I think you are definately a candidate for transfer but I would be wary of mentioning your depression unless it is what is precipitating a move back to RI. I kept mine off my app's.

I highly doubt this is the case. Though I did not do this for Brown, I wrote one of my UChicago essays on my dealing with obsessive compulsive disorder, and I was accepted for this fall.

It really depends on how you want to explain it. There is a board specifically dedicated to handlying mental health issues in the admissions process.

For most colleges, collegeboard.com lists the number of transfer applicants and the number accepted. Unfortunately the figures for Brown are unavailable. But I seem to remember that the number accepted this year was very small (or was it none??)

The most recent information available that I have found was from the US News Premium edition, but it was taken from 2005's data. The transfer rate for that year is 24%, and I believe it had been pretty consistent up until last year, when it decreased to around 10% or lower.

Guess what! Brown made 60 offers for the fall and spring with an applicant pool of over 1200. WSJ can say what they want, but I trust the admissions officer who told this to me.
